Unfortunately, we as a clique and community are reaching nearing such a world. Adversely but sadly true, some communities and countries have already begun to discriminate against young adolescents and adults with special needs, or different views, turning into a constant fight for survival. People with lack of acceptance have differences in personalities, experiences, and behaviors. There are many major similarities and differences concerning the characters in “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keys and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Even though The Book Thief was based on a little girl named Liesel, another character, Max, in the book experiences a lack of acceptance. The setting of The Book Thief is during World War II, when Jews were being persecuted for their religion and beliefs. Max has a worldly personality, so he is knowledgeable of the series of events happening around him.
In my view, that officer was representing society and he did not accept change. Being different is wrong, everyone has to be the same, act the same, look the same etc. The whole point of this book, is because people are different. This story reflects views on how being different is not the correct way to be living.
After many years of ridicule and hearing the same untasteful mean words the author learns how to cope, but coping only last as long as they are among friends or others like them, behind closed doors it is a different story. “I spent many years shutting the staring out. ” ... “In truth the door slammed hard, and I lost it all, all the appreciation, flirtation, solidarity, that can be wrapped into a gaze” (Clair p7). Even though the author became accustomed of the ridicule when alone the sadness and hurt set in.
Through the protagonist Stephen, Nowland suggests that when faced with the decision between upholding societal expectations or dissenting in order to preserve our identity, we select the latter to achieve inner peace. Where we live, how we live and who we live with, significantly affects how we perceive the world. Living under the influence of others can create a veil over our identity, and cause us to believe in something we truly are not. While under this veil, we either lose ourselves completely or see the veil concealing ourselves from who we are at core. As a growing boy, Stephen is especially prone to the influence of others.
By not saying anything, Melinda drifts further away from others and more so isolates herself. Everyone looked at Melinda like she was a monster. Melinda received looks from people she did not even know. This got in Melinda’s head and resulted in her feeling worse and she too, feared who she was. Melinda could not bear to see herself as she only saw an ugly person with many flaws.
Literature can be analyzed with many different critical lenses. While analyzing To Kill a Mockingbird, one may use a critical lens to recognize the different ideas throughout the novel. Harper Lee’s novel demonstrates her perspective on intolerance and discrimination within the early twentieth century. Firstly, intolerance of people who are different is very prevalent within the novel.
The book was challenged by a middle school in Brentwood, Tennessee in 2006 because the book contains “profanity” and “contains adult themes such as rape and incest.” The complaints also say that the book promotes “racial hatred, racial division, racial separation, and promotes white supremacy.” The people that say that are people that are trying to ‘protect’ other people from knowing and understanding what happened in the past because they believe that if they do know and understand what happened in the past then they will become racist and believe in white supremacy. These kinds of people are like the Holocaust deniers who believe that six million Jews where not murdered despite all of the evidence against that. George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are bound to repeat it.”
The classic book Flowers for Algernon, which was written by Daniel Keyes in the late 1900’s, explains the story about a middle-aged man named Charlie Gordon and the struggles he faces from having a mental disability. Charlie Gordon worked at Donnegon’s Box Company, but while working there, he was made fun of and called stupid for something he can’t control. Charlie had a wish for all people to love and accept him, but couldn’t understand that there is always going to be someone that wouldn’t like him which made him feel unwanted and unappreciated. Throughout Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes develops a theme of self-acceptance to explain how people shouldn’t change themselves to fit in with others.
This is ironic as many say that there is no right or wrong in this world but by categorizing them into right and wrong shows inconsistency action.
