According to the film The Rape of Europa, many citizens waited upon the arrival and cheered as the paintings were taken out of the beds of the trucks. An onlooker said that “It wasn’t about the beauty of the art, but it was a sense of victory.” Remarkably, David was left untouched. The sculpture, once again, won another battle. This time it was against the Nazis. They were taking every piece of art to add to Hitler’s growing collection. David stood tall as the Nazis were defeated in World War Two as he did when he defeated Goliath.
The David was created in the Renaissance period, much like the Mona Lisa. Michelangelo sculpted the David between 1501 and 1504. It is a fourteen foot statue depicting the biblical hero David. Louis often. Whether it was for a concert, a sporting event, or to shop, I would always become excited. I grew in love with how huge a crowd could flood the city streets of St. Louis. Union Station was my personal favorite. When I would go with my mother at night, the lights of the stores would ignite a sense of excitement into all the shoppers. I would walk into each store and see every one filled with dozens of people. Walking around Union Station would become necessary whenever I happened to be in St. Louis. Sadly, the fall of Union Station has occurred and it breaks my heart. I could not handle seeing the decline of it. Recently, I visited the Union Station in the summer and walked around the mall and even fewer stores were open. It had seemed as if every time I went to Union Station, the mall got smaller and smaller. The experience of going to Union Station will forever be cherished.
