Many people grow up not knowing what they will have a career in. This was not the case for Mickey Mantle. Mickey Mantle was a great baseball player in the fifties and sixties. Few athletes seldomly make is as far as Mantle did. Even those that do make it usually get hurt after a few years and must retire early. Mantle was one of the few that got the priviledge to do what he loved for several years more that the normal. He was a symbol of the Yankees and their greatness (World Biography). Everything in his childhood lead up to playing baseball in the major leagues. After overcoming many obstacles, MIckey Mantle was successful in his career, earning numerous awards, and successful in his life after retiring. Mickey was selected to play in the All Star Games in 1952-1965, 1967 through 1968. He won the American League Runs Scored Leader in 1954, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1960, and in 1961. In addition to winning the American League HR Leader in 1955, 1956, 1958, and 1960, he was also the American League Slugging Leader in 1955, 1956, 1961, and in 1962. In 1956 Mantle received the Triple Crown, which is when a player leads the league in three specific statistical categories (Awards and Records). Mantle hit 536 lifetime home runs and won the most valuable player three times. He led the American League in homeruns four times and holds the all time record for homeruns in world series play which is eighteen. Mantle also played on twelve pennant winning teams and seven World Series winning teams (World Biography). In 1956, 1957, and 1962 Mantle was presented with American League MVP.
