University of Maryland University College What is the one thing most Americans have these days? Like most Americans the answer is probably a Facebook account. Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebook wanted the world to be able to share their lives online. The main goal of Facebook was to make the world more open and connected place. Facebook came into existence as everybody’s social network at the time in history when the category of online service went mainstream. There has never been any situation quite like this in the anti-trust legislation, and the law around anti-trust have failed to understand this dynamic. People join other social sites such as LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter and all other social networking sites primarily because of the unique feature benefits those services offer, and only secondarily because of who else is a member. All those company’s social networking competes in some way against Facebook on a level playing field. LinkedIn offers unique features such as adding resumes to your account. Pinterest competes with graphical layouts and easy posting. Twitter pushes for quick and easy posting. These companies are trying to win users over with features and product benefits, but Facebook is competing with the most important feature of them all. Your family and friends.
