Religion started to play a major role in the Middle Ages as Charlemagne and many emperors from the Ottoman Empire started ruling under the title of The Holy Roman Empire, giving religion power since the pope has the ability to crown emperors. The church, becoming powerful and wealthy, was able to gain more and more followers and believers. This led to conflicts between the church and the states throughout the rest of the Middle Ages, as both powers believed that they have more power than the other. To control the chaotic situations from within and out of the empire, feudalism was created. Feudalism developed during the Middle Ages, being able to keep the economic and political conditions stable.
In the Middle Ages, the power of people impacted the society, because of the Feudal System. In other words, the rankings of people. There were four groups. The Kings and Queens were at the top, then the nobles, the knights, and last peasants and serfs(Doc. 1). Serfs and peasants had very little land given and they even had to provide food that they farmed for the knights and nobles.
There were three major examples of the Medieval Christian Church controlling political and military behavior of Kings, and I think that, over time, the Church’s power grew. This is most exemplified by the Benedictine Monastery at Cluny and church reform, the First Crusade, and the Investiture Conflict of 1075. First is the Benedictine Monastery at Cluny, founded in 910 by the Duke and Duchess of Aquitaine. The Monastery soon became rich after it received several gifts, pushing for the authority of the newly appointed Pope. The reason that so many people had such veneration and reverence for this specific Monastery is that it was given under the protection of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, should anybody ever choose to try to overrule it.
The middle ages brought very few books because the monks would spend month’s hand writing copies of religious writings which made the books immensely expensive. Document B states that “Man think sin in the beginning full sweet, which in the end causeth thy soul to weep, when the body lieth in clay” (Doc B) that means that if you were to commit a sin it will catch up to you in the future and you will have to pay the price. That quote basically sums up the thought on how the middle ages worked. The difference on how literature changed the way man thought during the renaissance was because people realized they didn’t have to always right about religion, they were open to write about anything they wanted to which made them smarter and important. Science during the renaissance played a big impact on how people looked at the universe and the environment we live in.
The Middle Ages was the time period after the fall of the Roman Empire around 500 CE to the 1350’s. During this time the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope held the most power throughout Europe, the priests often lived in a closed area inside the walls of the monasteries. “Schools were few. Illiteracy was widespread” (Background essay) because of this average person of this time was illiterate .and more than 85 percent of the population were farmers and peasants called serfs and they worked in an estate for the owner called the lord.
It was a progressive age in the sense of invention and art. A prominent difference between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance was the change from a religiously fueled society to a belief in a more secular world, and a stronger focus on humanism. The Middle Ages and the Renaissance can be considered one of the two main eras that influenced the world we live in today. The Middle Ages, which lasted from the 5th to the 15th century, was a time of darkness, death, cultural diffusion,no education, art, and literature. The Renaissance, started in the 1350s, stirred a lot of new ideas to the public, and showed what the world really has to offer. Politically, before the Renaissance, people were under the impression that god chose the man in charge. They lived in a world where feudalism was established.
During the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church had a great amount of power because it was the only one at the time. As expressed in The Canterbury Tales, it even oversaw the court, so one could propose that the Church had exponential power. They seemed to rule the economy and hold a lot of land. Kings and queens were even preceded by the Church. Supposedly, in those times, the Catholic Church was a source of great hypocrisy or a good number of its people were.
With the ancient civilizations dating back to 5000 BC the time gap inbetween the middle ages effects why the middles ages was very different. The ancient civilizations were the stepping stones to the medieval times and in lots of the ways the middle ages was very similar to the ancient times. But here are some reasons to how the middle ages were different to the ancient civilizations. Greece When people compare the middle ages and the greek times they instandly think that the middle ages were worse because it was considered the "dark ages" where people died and it was a dark and gloomy era.
The Renaissance was a time of renewal when learning and art was being valued more and more. The word “Renaissance” literally means rebirth. In the Middle Ages there was not a lot of learning and art going on. In all truth there was a huge rapid decline of learning and art then from when the Romans and Greeks ruled. Lorenzo De Medici was an italian statesman during the Renaissance.
Starting in the 5th century lasting until the 15th century, Europe is marked by the Medieval Ages, also known as the Middle Ages. The Medieval Ages began around year 495 AD. The fall of the Western Roman Empire often denotes the start of the Medieval period that lasts almost 1,000 years. The Medieval era is signified by castles, crusaders, and the rise of religion, specifically, Catholicism and their cathedrals (MiddleAges.org).
The period from the fall of the Roman Empire, which is called the Middle or Medieval ages, was a difficult time in the history of the Church and Europe. There were many controversies and abuses in the Church, coupled with external threats and invasions from different nations. That is why when people think of this period, they refer to it as the Dark Ages. But then, it is also during this time that the Church had some of its major achievements. The Church definitely transformed during this period and as it did, it also simultaneously transformed the nation of Europe.
Unit 2: The Middle Ages and Renaissance The two most important times in world history for the arts and music was the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Both time periods shaped our world in ways that are still used today. The Middle Ages was a time of migration, war and then a period of cultural growth.
The Dark Ages. The Golden Ages. They seem to be polar opposites, and in some ways, they are. However, they do have things in common. The Middle Ages (or the dark ages) was followed by the Italian Renaissance (the golden ages).
Middle Ages Imagine a time without TVs, cars, ,computers, and flushing toilets. Imagine a time when most people worked hard tilling the soil with simple implements and couldn't even call that land their own. Also the Middle Ages started in Europe from the 5th century to the 15th century. In the 14th century a horrible disease struck Asia, Africa and Europe.
