Growing up in middle class I never really gave thought to the things I we had from a financial standpoint. Money was never an issue so things like “we cannot afford that” or “that is too much” were never used. I was very sheltered when it came to how much things like health insurance or car insurance cost. Through the Hidden Values and Perspective chart , the game of life, and the Morgan Spurlock Minimum Wage Video where he lived on minimum wage for a month I was able to see that for plenty of people those are daily problems. These pieces really challenged my beliefs because I was not aware of how people in poverty thought about and what their concerns are surrounding Food, Family Structure, and Time.

The name of the chart is “Hidden Values and perspectives of People Living in Poverty, Middle Class, and Wealth”. I really think this is a well suited title because these outlooks were so hidden from me even though they were in plain view. If I had filled this out on what I thought before seeing these texts it would have shown how sheltered my views on poverty were.Two boxes that caught my eye right away are family structure and and food. I would not have thought that the family structure would be matriarchal. To me having the father in charge just seemed like that was the social norm. I knew that there obviously were times where that was not the case especially coming from a household where I only have one parent alive. Never would I have thought that an entire social class would hold that as their norm to have it reversed.This definitely challenged what i believed because I did not know that this was so
