One thing I would like to compare about these two very inspirational African Americans would be there sense of genuineness. Jesse Jackson talks about in his speech how he does not care who you are, what color you are, or who you love. He wanted to just help the people in need. He wanted to help the poor, the gays, and the colored. He wanted peace, and for people to all have insurance, while not being treated differently for not making as much money, being colored, or being gay.
In the book Brian 's winter the main character is Brian from the book Hatchet. Brian 's winter is a spin of book telling the story of him if he wasn 't rescued at the end of Hatchet and had to last the winter in the woods. This book was made to the people wondering what would 've happen to brian if he wasn 't rescued. Brian 's Winter shows how tough he has to be able to survive and make it through the winter.
The way he talks about the black slave’s actions towards the whites and how blacks have a kinder soul than the whites. He says that “… there is a solemn awe in the hearts of blacks, as it respects murdering men: whereas the whites, (though they are great cowards) …, they murder all before them…” (pg. 24). In the story, he tells about the black woman helping the white man runaway this how he explains it. He sees that even though blacks have that kind part in them that to live and go against the whites being nice ever so little will hurt the whole operation. This article really spoke to the blacks about unity and that the only way to achieve that is to only care for one another and not the whites.
When it comes to Whitfield’s poetry, his tone stands out as a key factor of his writing style. Most of the writing about slavery from black authors in the 1800s features ugly themes and retelling of experiences, but Whitfield excels at bringing his cynical attitude to the surface of his poetry. He also includes redeeming moments that instill hopefulness. His poem America exemplifies his direct tone of writing. He wastes no time to set the tone in his opening passage “America, it is to thee,| Thou boasted land of liberty,
Over the last couple of days in class we have discussed F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “Winter Dreams”. This short story explores several themes such as reality vs idealism and over expectations. These themes communicates through the use of various literary devices such as irony, symbolism, allegories and imagery. Through the use of these literary devices each character is brought to life and given its own type of personality. One quote that explores how the main character, Dexter, is given a unique personality states “The helpless ecstasy of losing himself in her charm was a powerful opiate rather than a tonic”.

Fitzgerald has multiple stories that he is well known for, but The Great Gatsby is his claim to fame. In most of his stories he focuses on the American Dream, mostly the failure of it.

The book The Boys of Winter by Wayne Coffey tells a story about the 1980’s Olympic semi-finals between the U.S.A hockey team and the Russian hockey team. Since the 1960’s team Russia has dominated Olympic hockey. They set an example of how to play the game like, only taking wrist shots, because why risk breaking your stick or getting a splinter with a slap shot. The Russians had no doubt that they would win. But coach Brooks, the coach of the Americans had the game all planned out with trick plays and players playing different positions to mess with the Russians.
In A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens utilizes a plethora of literary devices such as similes, metaphors, imagery, and denouement to explore the capacity for change. This reveals that changing is never impossible until you’re six-feet under. A simile is a comparison that usually uses the word “like” or “as”.
