In the book A Midsummer Night’s Dream, four lovers are put under love spells, creating obstacles for two couples. Problems often happen on the journey of finding true love, making the stereotypical “fairytale” relationship difficult to find. There are always obstacles and troubles on true love’s path.

Another part in the play when Hermia and Lysander prove that they love each other is when Lysander says, “If thou lovest me then steal forth thy father’s house tomorrow night and in the wood.
Oftentimes in literature, using magic is portrayed in a way that results in conflict. In the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare uses magic to create dissension between the characters. For instance, magic was used in a love spell, which later strained the relationship between Lysander and Hermia, created tension within Helena’s and Hermia’s friendship, and catalyzed Titania’s love for Bottom. Initially, Lysander and Hermia both love each other, but Lysander is put under a magical spell which causes him to fall in love with Helena. Because of this, Hermia and Lysander begin to feud and tarnish their relationship.

I will be touching on a few of the main relationships in A Midsummer Night’s Dream including; Lysander and Hermia, Helena and Demetrius and Theseus and Hippolyta.

There is the love of a puppy, the love of money, the love of a mother, the love of a friend, and the passionate love that is only expressed to a lover. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, many different forms of love are presented to the reader, from the love of a friend to the love’s truest form, romantic love. One of the most prevalent forms of love in A Midsummer Night’s Dream is romantic love. There are many different examples of romantic or true love in this play.
Throughout Shakespeare play he had a few plays that revolved around a love story. Some were tragic and ended with someone dying, like Romeo and Juliet and some of his love story’s just had hardships in the relationships. Like the lovers in a midsummers night dream. They all had to overcome many hardships throughout the story, like Hermia’s dad, the spell they were put under, Demetrious not loving Helena and loving Hermia.
Every story can be interpreted differently, and every person can draw a different conclusion and message from it; however, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it can be argued that a person does not choose whomever it is that he or she falls in love with. People just love, and the wondrous answer to why it happens that way just might be found in this magical work by Shakespeare. A Midsummer Night’s Dream tells multiple stories that end up affecting each other throughout the course of a night in Athens, Greece. There are lovers, Hermia and Lysander, who run to the forest to be together and fight for true love. Then there is Demetrius who loves Hermia even though she does not love him back.
The plot of Midsummer Night’s Dream consists mostly about two couples. Lysander and Hermia re in love, but making that love flourish becomes a difficult task due to Hermia’s father, Egeus. He wants Hermia to marry Demetrius, which used to make love to Helena until he met Hermia and fell in love with her. Helena deeply in love with Demetrius, insists that he should be the one and only for her; even though Demetrius treats her like a worthless piece of trash. Helena’s love for him persists throughout the play.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream was first written in London around 1594 (when Shakespeare was 31 or 32 years old), which was around the same time as Romeo and Juliet.
The character Hermia is sleeping, but as you can see, it seems like she’s sleeping on a cloud. As she starts to dream she is elevated on the cloud to which it looks like she’s floating. The meaning that things are not what they seem embodies the play and in the title itself. Shakespeare continuously creates the idea of imaginary in many ways: the characters falls asleep continuously in the forest, the fairies doing magic on the characters to create a state of dream, and the couples thinking they’ve been dreaming for the past few days.
