Pain is something that most people tend to overlook, they reach into their medicine cabinets and haphazardly pull out any medication that’s symptom relief describes them best. They take a few pills, go on with their busy day and ignore the situation; or at least that's what I did. In the beginning of December I had noticed that my stomach was tight and very hard and hurt when I would lay on my stomach for long amounts of time, I had thought that the pain was just cramps and took Advil to try and relieve the pain, the Advil eased the pain temporarily but as soon as it would wear off I noticed the discomfort and pain. Dr. Amy Rosenman, a Urogynecology and pelvic surgeon in Santa Monica,California says that “ If it is smaller than 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter it may very well go away on its own...If it is closer to 10 cm or 4 inches it is less likely to go away on its own.” When reading either an Ultrasound or an Catscan you are able to see the measurements of the cyst and from there the size can either cause concern or Treatment varies from patient to patient, but typically ovarian cysts heal on their own within 4-6 weeks or during two menstrual period cycles. If your cyst is smaller than 2 inches than your doctor will typically use the watch and wait method: the doctor typically sends you home with no treatment and will schedule you a follow up appointment 3 weeks later to check the progress of the cys, whether it is healing , had healed or is getting worse. If your cyst was 4 inches or bigger than the doctor will remove it Laparoscopically. During this procedure the doctor is very conservative and only makes a small incision for a probe to fit in and then they leave all of the normal tissue and only take the cyst tissue out. In very rare cases the doctor will have to remove the affected ovary if the cyst has been to damaging.
