Karen Cushman’s The Midwife’s Apprentice accurately portrays the relationship between a midwife and her apprentice and the technology and methods used by a midwife in medieval England. Often, midwives did not treat their apprentices with respect. Midwifery was a craft involved in the guild system. Within guilds there are superior positions and inferior positions.
Throughout this piece of literature, “The Midwife’s Apprentice”, Alyce (or Beetle) went from having no self esteem to having self esteem back to no self esteem. Beetle self esteem raised in chapter 5, “The Merchant”, when a merchant gave her a comb and a compliment. The compliment was “Comb those long curls till they shine, girl, and sure you'll have a lover before nightfall.” This compliment was the first one Beetle ever had received and it made her feel better about herself. She was also called a person she was not, Alyce.
Throughout the 15th century through the 17th century the status of women is exemplified to be that of a subordinate position through the readings of “The Passion of Artemisia” by Susan Vreeland, McKay textbook chapter 13 reading and the DBQ “Did Women Have a Renaissance”. Traditional societal values and ideals, blinded many to the accomplishments and potential of females and continued to perpetuate a culture that valued and identified women with domestic work and motherhood. The institutionalized ignorance and ingrained bias of society helped to propel forward the systematic oppression of women whos minute sphere of influence equaled to less political power and property ownership. Subjected to violence, ridicule, discrimination and

Widler Limage Renaissance Italy Professor: Giovanna Benadusi April 14, 2017 Renaissance Family and Gender Relationships During the Renaissance period in Italy, diverse ideas that had a lasting impact on the world were developed. First of all, families went through complicated concepts, such as humanist literature, religious discipline, and gender rights without equal opportunities for both sexes. However, the concepts of masculinity and femininity were a huge issue in the 14th and 15th centuries. Florence, a major city in Italy, began to offer new buildings of the great architectural works of the times, where wealthy salesman hired people to show their skills and do their most inspired work.
They had a higher status than midwives and enjoyed social standing while earning good money through their practice. Iatromea combined the practices of both midwives and Medicae to become medical practitioners. There are two literary figures that were found to be important to understanding the correlation between women practicing medicine and witchcraft. Agnodice of Athens was the first recorded midwife practitioner who disguised herself as a man to study obstetrics and gynecology when women were not allowed to do so in Greece. Fabiola was a noblewoman who used her wealth to build a hospital and practiced healing as a religous
Without quality education about the “natural method” women were unable to properly use the tool given to them, and each time they chose to have sex with the one they loved they ran the risk of pregnancy. The rise of the use of birth control and abortions during this time was proof that not all women desired to have children and become stay-at-home wives. If one could view the occupation as housewife as just an occupation just like a lawyer or teacher. It becomes merely a choice and although to some it may be considered a calling it is not a calling for all women. Therefore if motherhood is a profession it becomes simply a choice and not a
Beginning with the emergence of the Middle Ages, it is safe to say that men completely overshadowed women. The concept of the Medieval Period was taken over by thoughts of the male gender. Perhaps, it is safe to say women in the Medieval Period were neglected Not only did the women lack appreciation, they were also stripped of some of the most basic rights that men possessed. Unfair laws at the time stated that women could not marry without their parents’ consent, and to make matters worse, they also couldn’t divorce their husbands. Another outrageous law stated that women could not inherit land if she had surviving brothers .
The Renaissance was a period of great development and innovation in Europe, marked by a renewed interest in classical learning, art, and science. As the Renaissance swept across Europe, women found themselves at the forefront of the revolution breaking free from the constraints of society to add their own ideas to the new era of intellectual expression. To the common eye, the era was filled with many great male thinkers and artists, and the role of women is often overlooked. However, despite facing numerous obstacles and restrictions, women found a way to make their own significant contributions to their communities and the Renaissance as a whole. Many believe women did not contribute to the era due to some biased ideas that have been brought
Imagine walking through a small town and seeing little toddlers begging for food or suffering from a severe sickness that would soon kill them. Children in the Middle Ages did not have the option to live the lavish lives children have today. Many times children would die during delivery because it was such a hard process for them, and put so much stress on the babies. If the children did not die during delivery, the mom might have during the birthing process because they did not have the doctors or the proper tools to make the process easier. Not to mention there was little to none pain suppressors for this process also.
The Renaissance marked the most pivotal moment in human history that ended an archaic time, and initiated modernity. The rise in power of the female voice started during this period and built the foundation for feminism. The secular society of the renaissance began the historical rebirth for women, as they became liberated from inferiority through education. The start of educating women led western society to recognize the intellectual extent of female potential for the first time in history.
Midwifery In The Middle Ages One of the most important jobs to the women of the Middle Ages is often left forgotten and unmentioned. Without these people, there would not have been enough people to populate the villages and castles of Medieval times, or even enough to build such structures. Without someone ensuring that most births are successful, the population would not have been big enough for society to develop manorialism, or enough citizens become knights, or to fight in the Crusades, or to form guilds and towns, or even enough people to consider the Middle Ages a significant part of history, Midwives were an essential part of Medieval society, in many ways. A midwife is a person who assists a woman in childbirth, who, in the
The renaissance was a time of many different improvements and changes to the era previous to it, the medieval ages, the renaissance re-introduced many different Roman and Greek traditional aspects, so much so that renaissance literally translates into “rebirth” in French. Other changes include social such as the rise of humanism and humanist beliefs, secularism, individualism, big changes in mathematical studies, sciences and all types of learning in general, the printing press invention, as well as religious changes, and the arts were also affected and changed with techniques such as chiaro-scuro, perspective, sfumato, and further more to be explained. The renaissance started in the end of the 14th century and ended in the 17th century. In
The arrival of a new baby, especially the first always marks a new beginning for a mother. It comes with a lot of challenges more so if the mother is less knowledgeable about baby care. Take such as cleaning the baby for the first time, or feeding, it is not easy. The baby is still fragile and slippery and needs a special care. But if the mother is not ready for all these, or maybe, does not have any knowledge on what to do, the baby’s life might be endangered since the baby needs a special care which only the mother can give.
