In John Steinbeck’s book; Of Mice and Men, we follow the story of two migrant workers named George and Lennie looking for their next place of employment. In this paper the reader will be given a synopsis of the story, and in addition there will be a brief biography of John Steinbeck that will tie into the book Of Mice and Men. There will be reasons given to why the book was challenged and reasons why the book is still challenged presently. The reader will also learn about the timeline and players involved in the challenging Of Mice and Men. This paper will additionally have three examples from the text that contribute to the books controversy.

In the first couple pages of the book the reader can notice that Lennie has a mental disability and that George is the caretaker of the challenged man. For example; Lennie is drinking a good amount of the river water that is on their path. George insists that Lennie to stop what he is doing because the river is not flowing and that Lennie can get significantly ill. However, Lennie continues and even submerges his whole head under the Salinas River. Lennie is a powerful, bulky man who does not know his own strength. He enjoys petting “nice things;” which include mice, however, Lennie is over aggressive and kills the mice. Lennie additionally finds his happy place when petting rabbits. George is a small, but authoritative man that talks for the two men when finding their next potential employment. As told by George, the two men had been kicked from their last job because of Lennie. Both men are looking for a ranching job with housing. Curly employs the two men. Lennie and George work for the men; however, Lennie starts to make mistakes. Lennie kills the rancher’s puppy because he was over aggressive petting the dog. Lennie is devastated by his actions and is met by Curley’s wife in the barn. Curley’s wife is in a
