Miguel Pinero was one of the most well-known Puerto Rican writers of his time. Winning a Tony Award in 1975 with his play “Short Eyes” and being nominated for a Drama Desk Award, New York Drama Critics’ Circle and an Obie Award. Miguel Pinero was not only a poet, he was also a play writer and an actor. With all his qualities, Pinero helped create the Nuyorican Poets Café in New York City. Many things inspirited Pinero to write, but what inspired him the most was his life and life experiences and what was surrounding him. Miguel Pinero was born in Puerto Rico but later moved to New York at the age of four. His father was out of the picture so Pinero took it upon his self to support his family and started stealing to put food on the table. Drugs and crime were a constant theme simultaneously as well as in his life. The hard life on the streets of New York was also heavily influenced into his writing. He always wanted to help people who found everything around them difficult. He lived through the same exact thing that people were experiencing, how people were desperate on improving their life. Miguel Pinero was heavily influenced by the Young lord because of their teachings, were found in Pinero’s work. What made Pinero’s work so successful was his ability to express the issues that concerned society and to bring the realism of the streets of New York City, not only what people wanted you to see or what was showed in TV, he showed that true New York streets from the drugs, prostitution, and crimes. Most of his work were made in Spanish and in English since he was so proud of his Puerto Rican
