Reaching a milestone in a child’s life is considered a significant event. Milestones is when your baby is where he or she needs to be at a particular developmental age. This means, sitting and crawling when she needs to be, walking and talking when it 's time to do so. It is a thrill for parents to witness a baby’s milestone, whether it be the first time their baby smiles, grabs or hold onto a toy, or rolls over. But what are these milestones and when do babies reach them? How can you tell if your child is just taking his time or is actually delayed and what can influence your child’s development? • Stop comparing your baby to others. Babies are different, no two babies are the same. Get to know how babies develop, know there are sequences to baby developments too. They have to sit before they crawl, crawl before standing and standing before walking. There is no indication that minor variations in the achievement of milestones have any relationship to later abilities or disabilities. So just because your friend’s little baby rolls over sooner than your baby doesn’t mean your baby is less advanced. • Seek help in extreme cases. A mild delay in one area of development is generally not a cause for alarm, but if coupled with other delays, talk to your doctor. Also, let your pediatrician know when there’s a lag of more than a few months in any area of development. Your baby’s first year is full of memorable and delightful surprises. Try not to worry about whether he is smiling, crawling, or walking “on time”, and offer him a gentle word of encouragement like "you did it, good job or I am so proud of you" when your little one does something new every time.
