6 Crucial Military College Benefits Service Members Need to Take Advantage of
Military members enjoy excellent educational benefits as part of their pay for serving their country. However, there are multiple programs, each with different eligibility and application requirements. Below explains six excellent college benefits that every service member should take advantage of.
The Montgomery GI Bill
The GI Bill gives both veterans and active duty military members over $35,000 dollars of tax free financial assistance. However, newly added Post-9/11 GI Bill offers expanded benefits and even more complex eligibility requirements. This program allows eligible military students to postpone or even reduce loan repayments until they have stable employment. Deferment will temporarily delay the need to repay educational loans. Forbearance will allow the student to stop making payments for up to a year. However, interest will still accrue during this time. Tuition Assistance Programs (TAP)
This program offers up to $4,500 per year for tuition expenses. TAP is considered to be a form of base pay and not a loan. Keep in mind that each branch of the military has its own eligibility criteria and application process. For example, all branches, except the Coast Guard, offer 100 percent coverage of applicable tuition and fees. Most branches offer an easy online application process.
College Loan Repayment
The army, navy and air force all offer their own versions of a college loan repayment program. That is, they will pay up to $65,000 of eligible college loan debt. In addition to this, the program is also available to reserve military members.
