In the heat of battle men and women risk their lives to provide protection and ensure freedom for the county for which they fight. They are the all-volunteer military. The United States of America has not used the draft since the Second Indochina War, commonly known as the Vietnam War, because President Richard Nixon promised to end the draft during his 1968 campaign. Nixon believed that the draft was unconstitutional (Stewart 103). The military draft was officially discontinued on January 27, 1973. However, when a man who is a resident of the United States. turns 18, he must sign up for the draft, but he will not be entered into the lottery according to the Selective Service System. With more and more medications and better health care helping people to live longer, the population of senior citizens has gone up substantially according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The men who turn 18 would be chosen randomly if the draft was in effect, and the men who are not up to the physical standards for combat could do house work and other simple tasks that elderlies can not do anymore. “During the time when the draft was in effect, judges often let young men who were offenders of the law to have the choice of reform school, prison or the military” (Epstein 88). The draft freed up spaces in jails and prison cells for those who committed more serious crimes. The men who chose military over prison or reform school often improved their lives. The military was challenging and members gained respect for themselves, their fellow soldiers, and their generation. “In the Army you shaped up” (Walter 103).
