The military draft was a very controversial topic during these times. Some people believed it violated a person’s inalienable rights while others argued it was a part of being an American to be honored to show your patriotism; however, if you refused to serve, you were shunned and beaten by local villagers (Greenberg). President at the time, “Lyndon Johnson, called the draft "a part of America, a part of the process of our democracy"” arguing that the draft was an honorable and patriotic sacrifice for young men to make for their country (Greenberg). With the major cultural difference between the the 1960’s and today, less young men are enlisting to serve in the military. According to the National Public Radio, an estimated 8.7 million men served during The Vietnam War while only 2.2 million men serve in today’s military.
John Calvin’s major protest mostly began in Geneva. On his way to Strasbourg he took a detour to Geneva. William Feral, a reformer insisted he stay to help reform the church there. Calvin became a pastor and preacher but was asked to leave because of theological conflicts. He became a minister in Strasbourg lived peacefully.

The need for armed forces continually grows, especially in times of war, as the fight for freedom becomes more challenging. Conscription, better known as the draft, was first introduced during the Civil War as a way to get more individuals involved in the military to fill vacant positions. The practice of the draft was finally discontinued in favor of an all-volunteer military system, when the need for troops was no longer necessary. After almost two decades of being involved overseas, the demand for armed troops is imperative once again.

My opinion on this topic would be that it would be better to go to the military than college. If you wanted a better financial life don't go to college you may lose a lot. For you to go to a good college you have to have amazing grades or a lot of money and you may want to switch classes, and that could cost a lot of cash just for a textbook. In David Barno’s , “A New Moral Compact,” he stresses about our countries current military situation, which is all-volunteer. Barno has also served time in the military himself as a lieutenant general. He claims that the countries current dependence on the all-volunteer military, allows us to rush into war without thinking about the consequences first. Barno proposes the idea, “that every use of military force over 60 days would automatically trigger an annual draft lottery to call up 10,000 men and women” (p.20).This solution is useful but it is not useful enough because it targets sympathy from the people while he needs to target the president because the president can initiate a war without consent of the people or Congress.
In the United States, students must pay tuition for a higher education. Tuition on average can range from $9,650-$33,480 per year. College tuition should be free because people have aspirations that can only be reached with a higher education, it leads to economic improvements, and it could make us as successful as other countries. Higher education was close to free in this country after World War II for many Americans.
In most cases, people often do better in situations that they want to be in. By demanding men to go to war when they rather be somewhere else, they are not going to do their very best. If you have 60% of men who do not want to be there and only 40% of men who want to be there, your army force will not do as well if you had 100% of men wanting to be there. According to the University of Warwick, they proved that people who are happy work harder than people who are unhappy, in their study they said, “They found happiness made people around 12% more productive, while unhappy workers proved 10% less productive.” This statistic shows that forcing people to enlist will not make their army force better and stronger, in fact it does the exact opposite.
With that being said there are always those that are exempt from military service, as well as those who cannot be exempt and will inevitably have their livelihoods changed for the worse. The United States should call for mandatory military service to ensure the freedom and liberty for the children of tomorrow. A lot of people do not know the United States has called for mandatory military service before, just with a different name, the draft. The draft has been “employed by the federal government of the United States in four conflicts: the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam war. “This makes five different occasions when Americans were drafted for a total of 16.5 million people” ( Random Fact of The Day 1). 16.5 million people were drafted and under 1.25 million died in these wars, which is about a 7.6% death rate.
The debate as to whether a country should have mandatory military conscription has been discussed and practiced in places all over the globe. For the United States, implementing this would have several benefits from which the country could profit on. With this required aspect, there could be a promotion to the nation’s unity in which people would have a sense of equality to one another. Also, it would ensure all receive basic skills to place themselves further within other job careers. Finally, the mandatory service brings better awareness and participation with the government.
Not committing to the task could potentially suggest that they were incompetent or lack the capacity as a military personnel so facing ‘dangers’ was a much preferred option. Additionally, discipline in the military can be seen when an officer makes his salutes appropriately, their conduct, to the state of their uniform and even how they present themselves in public. While discipline in military is rewarded as it is a sign of respect and duty, misconduct on the other hand is punishable. When discipline is lacking in an army personnel, it not only affects their own performance but also the team as a whole. It is therefore important to instil discipline early and effectively.
