Hershey: The Man and the Company
Many people from all over the world enjoy chocolate, but chocolate has not always been as common as it is today. Normally when one thinks of chocolate, one thinks of Hershey chocolate; however, most people do not know where the name Hershey comes from. Milton S. Hershey, founder of the Hershey Corporation, is the person who made chocolate more affordable and available to everyone (The Hershey Company). His company has transformed what most people thought that chocolate could be. Hershey is not only a business; it was also a man who radically changed the definition of chocolate forever.

His purpose in starting this business was to make chocolate an “affordable luxury” (The Hershey Company). He also wanted to make it available to everyone. The first recorded sale of Hershey chocolate was on April 17, 1895. Soon it was sold in drug stores and grocery stores. The chocolate was sold in bars, wafers, and other shapes. Hershey also learned how to mass produce the chocolates easily. One of the company’s first advertisement slogans said that Hershey chocolate was “a palatable confection and a most nourishing food” (The Hershey …show more content…

Today, the name of the school is Milton Hershey School, and it also allows girls. It is one of the finest elementary and secondary schools, and at one time, there were plans for a junior college. In 1918, Hershey transferred most of his money to the Hershey Trust held for Hershey Industrial School. This school provides kids with an “education, meals, clothing, a home, health care, and counseling and career training” (The Hershey Company).Besides just a school, Hershey had architects draw up a plan for homes, buildings, banks, churches, parks, recreational facilities, a trolley system, and a zoo. Hershey provided all of these things for his employees. Hershey took good care of the kids and adults.
Hershey is a name most everyone knows for chocolate, but they do not know much about this man, Milton S. Hershey. People who love chocolate should be thanking Mr. Hershey because he revolutionized the definition of the candy. Not only did he do a great job with chocolate, but he also did an amazing job with his school and company.
