What exactly is psychology? While it may seem like a very basic question, it is one of the most common questions asked by students new to the study of psychology. During your first lecture of an introductory psychology class, your instructor might spend some time going around the room asking students to explain what they think psychology involves. During my first psychology class, one girl made a dramatic point of waving her fingers over another student's head and pretending to read his thoughts. Unfortunately, such misconceptions about psychology abound and part of the confusion stems from stereotyped portrayals of psychologists in popular media as well as the diverse careers paths of those holding psychology degrees.

Meditation is a different process because rather than making you escape reality it allows a person to focus their consciousness to alter their relationship to the world. Many people use meditation to help deal with stress or as a means of spiritual connection. The alerted state of consciousness that people experience during meditations can often help people to have profound or life changing experiences. Both hypnosis and meditation involve focusing on stimuli that are not common parts of our daily lives.
It is a type of meditation that helps people find the Middle Way (madhyamā-pratipad in Sanskrit), or the middle point between self-indulgence and self-mortification. Siddhārtha discovered that the Middle Way is where he can find peace, and so he started this practice and vowed to stay in meditation until he frees himself from himself and become enlightened. He meditated for many days, until he finally liberated himself from the cycle of suffering and rebirth. This is when he gained followers and earned the name Buddha, or “the enlightened

(Tahir, 2016) Meditation in Sunni Islam has similar benefits as Reform Judaism meditation, as it allows a person to relax and concentration on certain thoughts. A frequently used technique of meditation is where an individual will sit or lie in a comfortable position in a quiet room to be free of any and all distractions and imagining your presence in a peaceful and calm environment. The individual will then begin to breathe and exhale slowly. A recent study by The American College of Sports Medicine discovered that a whopping 35% of athletes regularly struggle with disordered eating, burnout, depression and/or anxiety. This number has only increased in recent years, and is becoming more evident with athletes bringing their mental health struggles to light. Buddhism was founded 2500 years ago with some of its practices, such as mindfulness and meditation, being adopted by the first world countries in the West but unfortunately most these practices are not genuine as they were adopted without the very significant religious context attached to them. Actually it bears similarity with orientalism which has been altered by the western culture and applied new conceptions to health, philosophies and business fields[1] in order to make it compatible to with their lives. Meditation and mindfulness have been scientifically proven to be useful as they improve well-being, promote calmness, and help people reduce mental stress[2]. The practice of mental culture (bhavana) can widen the mind to different human experiences, natural phenomena, life and the universe therefore increasing wisdom.
It’s often said or believed; that Retail Therapy whether offline or online is actually ‘Therapeutic’, more so as it holds the fundamental purpose of cheering the buyer's mood. With evolving technology solutions and changing commerce paradigms, online commerce (including retail) in the past decade has shaped up as a mini-vacation for self-rejuvenation for the buyers. And this wins as a universal truth! While online commerce boasts of being relaxing and easy, it’s more often than not being referred as pernicious. Meditation once seen as a quirky, hippie, eastern practice with no real merit has grown over the years in popularity secondary to its now known health benefits. But what is mediation really and where did this idea originate? To truly understand the possible answers, wouldn’t it make sense to analyze some of the earliest documented practices? Over the course of this winter quarter, I have learned in my class of Psychology of Wellness how to incorporate mindfulness into my daily life. The definition of mindfulness is considered an art. In the book of the Fully Present, the authors Susan Smalley and Diana Winston transmitted their wisdom on how to learn, practice and cultivate this art. According to the mentioned authors, they defined mindfulness as “the art of observing your physical, emotional, and mental experiences with deliberate, open, and curious attention” (2010, p.78). This definition shared by the authors is simple, but it communicates what are the characteristics that an individual needs to consider when it comes to being mindful.
