In If I Die in a Combat Zone, author Tim O’Brien argues that the Vietnam War was unjust by expressing his disapproval of the war through his own moral beliefs, sharing the descriptions of deaths in Vietnam of the innocent citizens, and by describing how much the war impacted himself and others negatively. In the beginning of the book, O’Brien openly stated his beliefs on the war. He believed it was wrongly accepted and unjust, but he battled his own opinions with society’s views anyway (18). Constantly, O’Brien discussed within his own head about the true definition of bravery and courage (147).
The poem “Facing it” by Yusef Komunyakaa is a deep poem that shows the aftereffects of war in modern society. The article called: “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders Among Vietnam Veterans”, by Robinowitz and Walter Penk shows the cultural context we need to understand about soldiers after the Vietnam War. By analyzing the article and the poem together we will discover the full cultural context and meaning behind the poem. The message of the poem is that PTSD is a serious issue that has been ignored for far too long, and now is the time to consider those who fought for us.
At the beginning of the novel, sixteen-year-old Steve Harmon’s life dramatically changed. The teenager was arrested and charged with the murder of a Harlem drugstore owner. Although Steve was presumably not the actual killer, his role as a supposed "lookout" for the gang that committed the crime ultimately landed him in prison. In the story called The 5th Wave, written by Rick Yancey. The theme of the 5th wave is, to survive you have to be careful who you trust. In the beginning of this book Cassie says many times that she never trusts anyone, for instance “The first rule of surviving the 5th wave is to not trust anyone, it doesn't matter what they look like”(Yancey 8). The quote clearly supports the theme because it shows that you can't survive if you trust people, the reason behind this is because the people that you trust turn out to be the others. Another quote that supports the theme is “I have to see your other hand,” I said.
If I Die in a Combat Zone, author Tim O'Brien argued that the Vietnam War was evil through his depictions of the harmful actions against the Vietnamese, first hand experiences of the soldiers, and lastly, his opinion throughout the war. O’Brien demonstrates the mutilation and murders of the innocent Vietnamese people by explaining how the soldiers belittled the orientals. The soldiers captured three old men and decided to tie them up (130). These old men were treated poorly by the soldiers because they were being gagged and restrained. Most of the company wasn’t concerned about the old men’s physical condition, since they were prisoners.

In society today there are young kids that do terrible things and they don't fully understand the extent of the matter. In the book “Monster” it tells the story of a young Steve Harmon, he planned a lookout that turned fatal but he had a change of heart. The people at the scene witnessed and could identify him as the lookout. He did not pull the trigger but he was involved in the crime. Steves name was mentioned when King and Evans were discussing the plans for the fatal crime.

As human beings, we crave certainty and stability in our lives. When that certainty is called into question, it can be deeply unsettling and challenge our very sense of reality. This is the central conflict at the heart of Rog Phillips' short story "The Yellow Pill," in which two men, Gerald Bocek and Dr. Cedric Elton, engage in a battle of perspectives over the true nature of their environment. While Bocek firmly believes they are on a spaceship, Elton is equally convinced they are in his psychiatric office on Earth. Ultimately, the evidence suggests that the story takes place on Earth, as Elton's repeated insistence on the tangible realities around him eventually breaks through Bocek's delusional worldview.
Into Thin Air Essay The book Into Thin Air, written by Jon Krakauer, explores the struggle of man versus man and man versus nature. The very different personalities proved costly to everyone involved on the expedition. The team of climbers that were hiking toward the summit of Mt. Everest on May 10, 1996, was oblivious to what lay ahead of them. No matter how advanced the hikers were, Everest on this day would test the will and endurance of everyone attempting to reach the summit. The one element that no one person could elude was pain.
As a high school senior, I have learned that not everything you hope for in your future will come to pass. I used to pile myself with extra work at school, which is not a bad quality for one to have, but once one does not get enough sleep and spends all their time studying, it becomes unhealthy. I had the mentality that I had to be the best student in class. I realized around my senior year in high school that this was not healthy, so I started to relax and dedicate some time to myself. I made sure to give myself a reward for an hour or two in between studying.
