Edward Hopper was a painter who depicted life in America in the 1920’s. His work was unique, he created work that translated to the lives of americans during his era. Raymond Carver was an American short-story writer and poet, he was credited with reviving what was once thought of as a dying literary form.
Both Hopper’s and Carvers art and writing, the characters overcome their crisis of communication, which progressively transforms them throughout the story. Minimalism affects the different types of form in Carver's writing. Carver uses minimalism to emphasize different aspects in people's lives. In Cape Cod Evening by Hopper, it is the “ result of a long process of deliberation” (National Gallery). Which interprets the way we see the picture. Hopper presents an assemblage of carefully stage-managed disparities that conduct a generally discouraged, skeptical attitude toward human identity and humanity’s relationship with nature. …show more content…

Carver used his characters to try and emphasize the perspective of the story. The short and condensed sentences in his writing provide a realistic and serious tone for the reader. For example, in the short-story “Chef’s House” the tone that is present during the whole story is sadness. Sadness is what helps build up the story and the world that they were living in. Carver and Hopper were very similar in many different ways, Carver's writing was inspired by Hopper’s work. They both use the theme that will be used as a reminder to inform the reader or viewer that life can be cruel at times. The minimalist style used in both of their work, alloys the unrevealed reality that bad things can happen to innocent people at any given moment.
