Looking at ancient civilizations you will find that women are often depicted as inferior to men and merely tools to be used for status, fertility, and a man's pleasure. However, there is one ancient civilization that seems to counteract this ideal. The minoans, a people who lived in modern day Crete, have become well known for their elevation of women. From dress, religion, politics, to myths and fables; the Minoan women have been honored for their beauty, wisdom, and divine nature. The architecture the Minoans has led archaeologists and historians to believe that they were an extremely progressive and refined people(Kebric). The men were often away at sea, trading and even possibly conquering land nearby. With the men gone for long periods of time women were required to develop the society at home. In religion, art, politics, and dress the women of Minoa represented themselves has the top of the chain. They were in a place of thriving nature, all of which was soon to be destroyed by a nearby volcano. But like the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. This short time frame for flourish of five hundred years or so was enough to make its mark in the ancient world. A gem in the middle of the Mycenaean sea, the culture of Minoans has such a fascinating and different aspect to it than the surrounding nations. Had the volcano not been so detrimental it would have been surreal for archaeologists to find more items, buildings, and what would have shed more light into the culture of Minoa, a rosetta stone. A women will always be valued, but the question remains did women ever reach the same level of rule in other nations at this time? Aside from the sea taking the men, were there any other causes for the elevation of women? We have been left with so many questions of this culture, one thing is for sure however, that women played the major roles at
