The minor characters with plastic faces, hired hair and their deluding sense of self importance is a greater treasure of the cast. Their conviction of all their actions are used for the greater glory of dancing. This will be portrayed with reference to Strictly Ballroom as a whole. Shirley Hastings is a more important minor character. She is seen as being in middle of all situations. And is most definitely over the top and fake. Her over done bleach blond hair and liking for wearing bright pink implies a sense of false femininity. She is also one of the loudest characters; thus making her stand out. Her world is all about dancing. She urges for Scott to be the best and live up to her standards. She is trying to live in the life of her children. …show more content…

He is associated with the colour white, to represent his purity; which doesn’t exist. Drunks and cheaters are definitely impure. He is also lit from above to give him an angelic quality, and shot from below to show his superiority. He has been portrayed in this way to show that there is more than one “good guy” in ballroom dancing. Yet towards the end, you see his real colours. Liz Hault is yet another bleach blond, fake character. She is also Scott’s dance partner and is as artificial as ever; this gives reason for Shirley to have big favouritism over her. She is also always seen in the colour yellow; this represents her cowardess and falseness. She also follows all the rules given, and isn’t patsy in any way. She is very childish and is portrayed as being vounrble by being shot at high angles. These indications take attention away from other girls, which is purely what she wants. Most of the minor characters have been portrayed in many ways that show their falseness, this has been done for the viewer to notice how the natural, underdone characters are the good, pure ones. Looking fake, makes you act fake. Without the observation of the minor characters, the important characters wouldn’t be analysed fully.
