In Harper Lee’s, To Kill A Mockingbird , she uses minor characters in a variety of ways to explore and discover the novel’s theme. Standing in another person’s shoes is one of the first things Atticus teaches Scout in the novel. These characters carry out the main theme of the novel, you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. Until you climb in his skin and walk around in it. In the notable novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper has three minor characters, Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, Dolphus Raymond, and Boo Radley to help carry out the theme of the book, which makes them crucial members of the story. He has to tolerate Mrs. dubose’s insults and cruel comments. Everyday they would be dismissed by an alarm that would go off right in time when Mrs. Dubose started to get more irritable, which confused the children. Little did they know that she was slowly trying to get off of her drug addiction. She was a morphine addict and she was slowly trying to get away from the drugs. Atticus says, “ she said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody. Jem, when you’re sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her. She said she meant to break herself of it before she died,and that’s what she did”(Lee 149). When Mrs. Dubose was able to listen to Jem read for two hours without craving her drugs, it was clear that she had stopped her morphine addiction. As a drug addict, she is most definitely mean and harsh, but the children only observe this without getting to understand why she’s like this. Atticus explains, “She was. Raymond, which lies to other to make their lives easier. Dolphus Raymond is assumed to be the town's sloppy drunk who spend his time hanging out with the colored folk. During the trial Dill becomes upset over something and was taken outside by Scout and Jem. While being outside Dolphus Raymond asked Dill to do something,” Come round here, son, I got something that’ll settle your stomach”(Lee 265). The kids followed the directions cautiously to find the suspicious drunken man. Dill preceded to take the drink from Dolphus Raymond and come to a conclusion that the so called alcoholic beverages was simply just Coca-Cola. Mr. Raymond explains, “ wh- oh yes, you mean why do I pretend? Well it’s very simple, some folks don’t like the way I live. Now I could say the hell with ‘sm, I don’t care if they don’t like it I do say don’t care if they like it, right enough- but I don’t say the hell with ‘em, see?”(Lee 268). When the children figure out that it's only Coca-Cola the kids begin questioning Mr. Raymond. He explained that he was forced to act messed up in the in the head and pretended to drink was to help the people who are prejudice in the town of Maycomb. He wanted to give them a reason as to why he spends all of his time with the colored folk. This shows the intolerance the town has towards anyone that isn't like themselves or color.
