Mira Nair's Techniques In The Film Monsoon Wedding

The film Monsoon Wedding (2001) directed by Mira Nair has been my favorite film so far. What makes the film so interesting to me is that Mira Nair put her own twist on the film by mixing an expected traditional Indian Bollywood film and adding modern Hollywood styles to the film. After doing research on Mira Nair and the film for my presentation, I can see why this is incorporated in the film since she spent time here in the United States studying acting and film at one of the top ivy league university’s Harvard University where she got influenced by modern ethics. The film shows this by the individuality of each character, music, and emphasis on camera angles. This film starts off with the bride’s father stressing about the setup of the wedding arrangements. The camera was well at portraying this by going back and forth between the decorations that were falling apart and the bride’s father reactions to them and the coordinator. This can be seen as your typical encounter for a father in a Bollywood film being angry and concerned. One way Nail did this can be seen in scenes where the camera zooms into the actors face to show their expressions. Close-ups were effective because they emphasized the storyline the character was currently going through. Another way editing brought the film together was in between scenes, fragment of the India lifestyle was shown and also included fragments of song and dance which made the film seem unreal. Mira Nail use or medium, full-shots, and natural lights were also used multiple times.
