In chapters 14 and 15 of Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer becomes more than just an investigator or a narrator, he becomes a character. He tells his story of climbing the Devils Thumb, which exposes the similarities between himself and McCandless. This aids to his understanding of McCandless’s motivations, without ever meeting him, due to the parallels in their personalities and family issues. Chapter 14 is devoted to Krakauer’s story about his youthful love for mountain climbing. At age 23, he plans to do a dangerous climb on the Devil’s Thumb in Alaska alone. “
In Chapter 9-14 Holden Caulfield leaves Penecy Prep and heads to New York City. Where he will stay for a couple days before winter vacation starts and he will head home. Delaying breaking the news to his family he got kicked out of school for as long as possible. These chapters are where Holden’s loneliness becomes abundantly clear. The reader is subjected to many long rants by Holden about the company he wants, though he attempts to settle several times.
‘Surrender? Don’t be bloody silly, we’re Australian’. This quote is the opposite view proposed within John Schumann’s article ‘Aussie image now a myth’. Schumann’s portrayal on Australian culture reflects the idea that Australian’s lack national pride and identity, based on the fact that we no longer possess the moral qualities of mateship. Australian mateship is defined as ‘companionship or friendship between men’, which is clearly not associated within Schumann’s article, which argues that we have lost our morals, motivation and mateship. This statement is clearly wrong.
Hardships are: tests that show your worth. They are occasions to show who you truly are. You are either a person who succeeds in the attempt or fails. In life with no struggles there's no gain because we learn from our struggles.
Even though some would think that poor families cannot succeed because of financial issues, many paths can lead one to a successful life. Although money may help lead to a successful live Jeanette and Brian show that your will and drive to succeed is much more important than a lifestyle. Many paths can lead to success, in Jeanette and Brian’s case they grew up with little to no money and didn't always have food to eat. Alas, this didn't stop them from being great Jeanette grew up to be a successful journalist. Some of the problems that Jeanette had was she had a lot of bullies, she was picked on in Battle Mountain, Walls and Arizona.
Holden Caulfield lives his life as an outsider to his society, because of this any we (as a reader) find normal is a phony to him. Basically, every breathing thing in The Catcher in the Rye is a phony expect a select few, like Jane Gallagher. What is a phony to Holden and why is he obsessed with them? A phony is anyone who Holden feels is that living their authentic life, like D.B. (his older brother). Or simply anyone who fits into society norms, for example, Sally Hayes.
This passage that is spoken by Eumaeus represents two themes. The first is the theme of hospitality. Throughout The Odyssey, a common theme of hospitality has been shown. Conflict is fundamental in writing as it plays a role in propelling the narrative. Conflict makes the story more exciting, and sweet. Most of the descriptions which lacks conflicting instances becomes very dull to the readers. The main characters in the story are pitted in an environment whereby they are required to make efforts for them to survive.
Michael Brooks ENGH 396 Reading Response #2 September 17, 2015 Sunday in the Park Sunday in the Park by Bel Kaufman is an emotional short story the details a nice family’s encounter with an obnoxious, unpolished family. The short story plays on human emotion, instinct, and behavior as a way to illustrate the contrasting differences between both families. The story is about a family, a mother, a father and a young boy, who intend to spend a relaxing day together in the park. In the park, the young boy from the “nice family” is playing in the sandbox with a young boy from the other family. Suddenly, the boy from the other family starts throwing sand at the boy from the main family.
Doe Zantamata, an American author, once said, “Good friends help you find the most important things when you have lost them... your smile, your hope, and your courage.” In Frank Darabont’s film The Shawshank Redemption, hope and friendship are a large part of the characters’ lives, as they are inmates in the Shawshank prison. Andy is a newcomer and intrigues Red, an inmate who has been in the prison for a long time. Although Red is not sure what to think of him at first, they soon become good friends.
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” has been performed by many inspirational instrumentalists, and singers, who have added their own personal touch to the classic. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of “Somewhere over the Rainbow,” can be compared and contrasted with Art Tatum and Judy Garland’s version in many ways. This short essay will include how each artist used elements of music differently, including texture, timbre, melody, harmony, and rhythm. First, the timbre of Garland’s voice is soft and sweet with a lot of vibrato.
Obstacles can be challenging, and difficult, but people can overcome them by never giving up, always trying their best, and surrounding themselves with families and friends. Two stories that I have read that show adversity are “A Work in Progress” by Aimee Mullins which is about a little girl losing her leg. The other story I read is “So Far From the Bamboo Grove” by Yoko Kawashima Watkins about a little girl that has to leave her home because of war and has very big obstacles to overcome. Aimee Mullins and the Kawashimas both face obstacles that include losing family members, walking very far in intense weather, and people doubting you and trying to stop you. In the end they all make it through the the challenges mentally and physically.
From the outset, I have to say that “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger has been one of the most important and influential pieces of literature I have ever read. At its core, the book is a superb coming of age novel which discusses several extremely powerful themes such as the difficulties of growing up, teenage angst and alienation and the superficiality, hypocrisy and pretension of the adult world. These themes resonated deeply with me and were portrayed excellently through the use of powerful symbolism and the creation of highly relatable and likable characters. One such character is Holden Caulfield whom the story both revolves around and is narrated by.
