In the film “The Hunger Games” directed by Gary Ross, the power of sibling-hood and family is a very important theme, and a great representation of this is the scene leading up to the reaping when Katniss and Prim are preparing for and attending the reaping. Ross uses this scene to apprise the audience of the strong bond that Katniss and Prim share and foreshadow the importance of the mockingjay. This scene is also used to inform the audience of the power and authority that the leaders of the capital hold upon the citizens of all twelve districts. He uses the techniques of gesture, dialogue, high angle shots and diegetic sound in order to do this. Ross uses the technique of gesture to show care and protection, when Katniss gives Prim the mockingjay pin. This technique represents an important part of Katniss and Prim’s relationship, Katniss is very protective of Prim and knows that Prim is terrified for the reaping ahead, gesture works with the technique of dialogue, as she gives the pin to Prim, Katniss says “It’s a mockingjay pin, to protect you and as long as you have it nothing bad will …show more content…

The mockingjay pin is a very important connection that Katniss and Prim share but we also see Katniss form a very sibling-like bond with Rue during the games, Katniss becomes very protective of her Rue as she is with Prim. Symbolically the mockingjay also has a very important part in Katniss and Rue’s relationship as they use the bird’s call to stay connected and alert the other that they are safe. The purpose of these techniques is to make the audience aware of the powerful bond of sibling hood that our main protagonist shares with her younger sister, we are reminded of this bond she shares with Prim but also with Rue everytime there are shots of the pin throughout the
