A misfit is defined as someone who doesn’t fit into any societal classes and is not easily accepted by their peers. They serve in television to contradict with the ideas of society, they have a power to rebel against a societal norm as the misfit character is often as lost in their world and therefor lost in the eyes of the audience. Their decisions and judgements will challenge the views of other characters within the show to provoke change within the society of their show as well as the society the audience lives in. From the 1960’s “The Addams family” to the 21st century “Mr Robot”, the misfit character has been able to influence the progression of society while adapting simultaneously.
The 1960’s was the beginning of an era of individuality and expression following a decade reigned by conformity succeeding the second world war. This shift in society gave television the chance to introduce new concepts around the ‘American Dream’. The Addams Family first aired in 1964 and portrayed a new idea of a perfect family. Much like Dale Cooper, Elliot Alderson is considered a Bunny Ears Lawyer. He is good at what he does, despite having personality flaws that prevent him from existing without effort in his society. Elliot’s character is a great example in demonstrating the change in society due to the introduction of the internet. His character suffers from schizophrenia and in turn creates an alter ego that is a more confident and boisterous side to his normal socially anxious self. This concept is like the world that the audience lives in, where people create different, more ideal versions of themselves online.
