Katherine Mehlem Ms. Baiden English 1 Honors 12 February 2023 Misjudgement in Literature “There’s a story behind every person. There’s a reason why they’re the way they are. Think about that before you judge someone.”(Anonymous). This quote talks about misjudgement and how important it is to not misjudge people. Everyday people will assume things about another person and misjudge them. Many authors have also written about or had the element of misjudgement in their literature. In the novels The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton and Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, readers are able to learn from how characters are misjudged. In The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, Darry is misjudged based on the way he treats Ponyboy, through his misjudgement readers can learn how Darry shows he cares. Paris wants to get married to Juliet, however, she is already married to Romeo. This causes her to see him as an obstacle and view him negatively. Even though Juliet does not like him very much, Paris is thoroughly in love with her. He shows the depth of his love when he comes to visit her in the tomb, “Sweet Flower, with flowers thy bridal bed I strew/Which with sweet water nightly I will dew/Or, wanting that, with tears distilled by moans/ The obsequies that I for thee will keep/ Nightly shall be to strew thy grave and weep”(Rom. 5.3.13-17). Through this quote, readers can see how much Paris truly cares for Juliet when he promises to visit her every day. He says he will decorate her tomb with flowers and either sprinkle it with perfume or his tears.
