Media has created a disproportional perception violent of crime in society. To understand this we first must understand that media is a business; therefore, its priority is to create profit. To generate interest and more viewership media will select which stories to show based on its newsworthiness. The way in which information is presented has evolved over time, with television shows such as CSI and NCIS we are led to believe that most crimes are violent in nature, however, statistics show that property crime is approximately is almost 10 times more prevalent. This misrepresentation can be explained by a functionalist model of media influence stating that we watch the news that we want to watch.
The fact that media is for profit means that every news story that we are presented is selected under eight criteria that define the newsworthiness of an article; prominence, timeliness, impact, proximity, novelty, conflict, contemporaneousness and human interest. The conflict aspect of a news story illustrates two people butting head and this incites the viewer to imagine themselves in the news story which results in the viewer to have a closer emotional proximity to the story.
