Isolation is when one is set apart from others and is virtually alone. In Laurie Anderson’s Speak, the protagonist, Melinda, isolates herself and is further isolated from others. Isolation can be seen through three symbols: lips, mirrors and a closet. Melinda thinks no one cares about what she has to say, resulting in silence. After the incident in the summer, Melinda cannot bare to look at herself.
In the collection of short stories “Interpreter of Maladies” written by Jhumpa Lahiri, there are multiple stories where characters feel like outsiders. For example, Mr. Pirzada feels like an outsider because he is a Pakistani in America and wants to go back because he misses his family and wonders if they are ok. Boori Ma feels like an outsider because no one believes that she came from a wealthy area and life, and Bibi Haldar does not feel normal and feels like an outsider because she is sick and needs help. Occasionally, Mr. Pirzada feels that he is an outsider because of his isolation from his family and his home country, Pakistan.
It’s Not Universal Humans are social beings and, typically, we prefer to surround ourselves with similar types of people. Often times, this means excluding others and even outcasting them from society. Nearly everybody has experienced being an outsider. whether it was not knowing anyone at a new school to not having the “must have” item that everyone else seemingly had. The experience of being an outsider is not universal because the feelings associated with being outcast are circumstantial, people react differently, and people have varying degrees of introversion.
Some have felt like they're in their own bubble and can't seem to get out, or are in a dark, narrow space and have no savior. Each person in humanity are like one in a million stars in the night sky, and some of these stars can create constellations, and others cannot. This here is something called loneliness, and everyone has experienced this feeling at some point in their lives. In this current society, people are judged by what colour they are, or what disabilities they have, and even how many possessions they own. Society today, more and more people are being placed into that dark, narrow room of loneliness.
Miss Brill is lonely, has a completely messed up mind, and tries to hide her true self by trying to live other people’s lives. Miss Brill views each person at the garden differently. The people who are mostly like her are the ones she judges the most, “Miss Brill had often noticed-there was something funny about nearly all of them. They were odd, silent, nearly all old, and from the way they stared they looked as though they’d just come from dark little rooms or even-even cupboards!” (Mansfield 185).
Brill dwells in everyday leads her to strange delusions and making strange decisions. While she has no companions in her life, she always finds someone to be a part of. She always seems to ease her way in to being in a social interaction with them, but without saying a word: “And still soundlessly singing, still with that trembling smile, Miss Brill prepared to listen.” (Mansfield) As she sees her eavesdropping as quite a skill, people around her seem to disagree. The short story states how people continue to walk on and ignore her as thou she isn’t even present in the park.
Loneliness can often make a person feel empty and upset. It can leave a person in despair and make them feel like they have no ambition. Steinbeck presents the possibility of forlornness and men who chip away at ranches,
The Heart of the Problem The famous nun, Mother Teresa, once said, “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.” Loneliness is a common and well-known thing that people everyday deal with, whether it's caused by one’s own actions or the twisted decision of fate. This own feeling of being alone and different from the rest drives the victim to crave that closeness and friendship the rest of everyone else has, but deny the idea that they crave for this companionship. Being lonely has to deal with both social barriers and isolation is just dealing with personal choice. Have you ever being an outsider before? Being in outsider could be a good thing sometime and sometimes not in this book that I read the outsider were two groups of kids which were the greaser the poor kids and the socs were the rich kids. My opinion is if you were an outsider you wouldn’t want to feel lonely because in the book and some documents that I did there were differences example of people being outsiders.
We all need to belong somewhere. Everyone needs people to be there for them. We need to adore our lives with others, rather it is our family, friends, coworkers, or just society alone. There are a lot of traits that makes everyone unique in their own way with some of these traits people can make you seem like you’re an outsider but it’s false.
