The Mississippi University of Women Which college has impacted women the most in education? The Mississippi University of Women has most definitely done that and more. Established in 1884, the first women’s college in the United States was established in Columbus, Mississippi with the passing of Senate Bill 311, giving women a chance to the education they had always deserved. This groundbreaking college did not come about without difficulty. The founders fought hard for what they believed in, which was the right of a higher education for women in the state of Mississippi. Sallie Reneau, Annie Coleman Peyton, and Olivia Hastings are credited with the establishment of the university. Annie Peyton is known as the “founding mother.” Each of them campaigned for the installation, especially Reneau, who was triumphant in persuading the legislature. In 1920, the decision was made to change the name from The Columbus Female Institute to The Mississippi State College for Women. The name that they had changed it to in 1920, remained the same until 1974. The university’s name was renamed to The Mississippi University of Women. That is still the current name of the college today. (Sansing 200). The name of the school does not fully reflect on the university as a whole because the school is now both for women and men, but it does show the importance of the reason the college was founded in the first place.
