Spying, intrigue, and mistrust are apparent themes in William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Each character is intrigued with the lives of the other characters. Spying is a common act of curiosity, which every human experiences, usually motivated by love, jealousy, or concern. Information is often misinterpreted while spying, and could often lead to a character's demise, as shown in Hamlet. In Denmark, everyone is always being watched or sent to watch someone, including Polonius, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Reynaldo and Hamlet. In my project, each character is peering out from behind an object that is related to an example of when they spied or were spied on. They were sent to find out why Hamlet was crazy, but Hamlet knew they were sent by Claudius. They are covered by the British flag because they followed Hamlet’s journey as he went to different locations. The queen is covered by a mask, because Polonius tells Gertrude how to act and what to say. Ophelia is covered by a book because of the instruction she was given by Polonius. To find out more about Hamlet, Ophelia was told to pretend to read, which further leads to the actions taken by Hamlet. Hamlet is placed in the middle circling around, because he is the master spy of the whole play. While everything is going on around him, he is always on top of everyone's business and has to be involved in what everyone is doing. In Act 2 Scene 1, Hamlet fakes being crazy in order to find out answers about his father. He is lying and being sneaky in order to get what he wants. Also, Hamlet discovered Claudius’s plan to have him murdered in England, and returns back to Denmark. Unlike the other characters in my project, Hamlet does not need something to hide behind, because he blatantly lies and fools others
