Our economy began with the signing of our founding constitution. It provides that the government will regulate commerce with foreign nations and individual states will create uniform laws, money, and services. It can be described as a mixed economy although others would like to believe it is solely a capitalist environment, it is indeed mixed. The market drives pricing, wages, and consumerism. We do; however, rely on the government to regulate and guide our economy and provide services such as education, healthcare, roads, policing, and court systems making this a mixed economy indeed. Often times we find ourselves running too far left and too far right. We are so concerned with labels we forget the real agenda. Community and a well-functioning society should be our true focus and agenda. The definition of a community is a social group of any size whose members share government and often have a common cultural or historical heritage. I dare say all of are part of one community and part of being a community is working for the greater good of the community. Having a more equal economy and less of a wage gap would be a benefit to us all. Today we live in one of the richest countries in the world. That statement is truly deceptive in nature. Unfortunately, the sad reality in our country today is that the top 10% holds almost as much wealth as the entire bottom 90%. How can we continue to allow such disparity amongst our citizens? We can learn something from Rawls theory of distribution. Rawls' position is comparable to a market economy in which wealth is distributed through the tax and welfare system. A distribution of wealth is what most people would regard as fair and just. Rawls believes we cannot do anything that isn’t in the interest of the lowest earners. His belief is that we all have an equal right to life’s liberties. A more egalitarian idea of sorts. I want to believe there is a right for all citizens of a community; which is what we are, an extensive tightly woven community. We all should have equal access to public services and civil liberties. I think this can be served by establishing an equal stipend given to all to cover basic services and
