Sometimes pain can put you down, but it can also make you strong. The story, Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry is a fictional novel that takes place in the future in a dysfunctional village where imperfections are unaccepted. Kira, a young disabled orphan girl, is taken in by the Council Edifice to work on the Singer’s robe for her beautiful threading skills after her mother died. While working on her new job, Kira learns lots of new skills, and is having a pleasant time until her friend, Matt, surprises her by bringing her father, whom she presumed dead, from another peaceful village, finding herself pressured with the tough decision of whether she should leave for the other village where disabilities are accepted or to stay where she is with …show more content…

For example, Kira recalls a time when she was younger and watched other “tykes” play but felt jealous because she was not able to join due to her twisted leg (pg. 8 and 9). This is one instance where Kira felt pain. Since she was not able to play with the other children, she found her extraordinary talent of threading and because of that she was taken in by the Council Edifice instead of being sent out to the Field. In addition, “‘But you were strong.’ ‘Yes. Mother said pain made me strong.” Telling him, she was no longer embarrassed, but proud, and she wanted him to be proud, too.” (pg. 225). Here, the author directly states the theme. Once Kira realizes that all the pain, like accepting her mother’s death and also accepting her own flaws, she went through she learned that all that actually made her stronger, and she wants to spread that it’s possible to overcome pain since she has been through it herself. One of the parts that stood out was when Matt, Kira’s friend, brought Kira’s father, whom she thought was dead. (pg. 221). This part was one of the climaxes in the story because it was unexpected and left Kira with a tough choice which complicated the plot even more. Her father also brought with him the possibility of Kira moving to a village where disabilities are accepted, but she decides not to move because she wanted to stay and be with her friends, which shows how much she has evolved from the beginning of the story where she was alone, to now where she has friends that she even considers family. Also, Jamison tells Kira that her work is “fine,” and that she does a better job than her mother (pg. 141). This shows, again, how far Kira has come and how inspirational she really is. Even though she has a twisted leg and no parents to guide her, she still stayed strong and concentrated on her job, which has payed off for her since she is getting positive feedback for doing a job she thoroughly enjoys. Thus, Gathering Blue is a very interesting book with an inspiring
