Just imagine yourself as a little, ten year old girl who was stripped away from her peaceful home and now has figure out how to survive under dreadful conditions. One peaceful night you are awaken by loud thumping of hard fists on your door. You awaken along with your mother and open the door, only to find out that the two men standing in front of you are French policemen, who have come to take you away. You are only allowed to pack so many belongings and you are taken away. The men said you would be gone for a couple of days, but you couldn’t. The men had lied. There is no going back home. The camp that Sarah was sent to, along with her mother and father, was called the Velodrome d‘Hiver. The Velodrome d’Hiver used to be an indoor bicycle racing track, but was used for the main purpose of confining Jewish men, women, and children before being sent of to their tragic demise. The first important plot event that occurred in the novel was when Sarah, her mother, and her father were taken away by the French. This is important because this is the start of Sarah’s journey throughout France. The Starzynski family and many other families were packed into a large arena that wasn’t even big enough for all the families. They were provided with very low amounts of food and were only fed canned fish with a small cup of water. The environment was dreadful, hot, and the latrines smelled utterly horrifying. Sarah and her family were able to survive the dreadful conditions and everyone who was alive were escorted out of the arena and into trains and were sent to a nearby camp. In the camp there was an eleven year old girl named Rachel, who Sarah later on becomes good friends with. Rachel had a burning desire to escape and was able to convince Sarah to tag along. They both were able to safely escape with the help of one French policeman. The third most important event that occurred was when Sarah and Rachel came upon a farmhouse with an old couple living there. The man had offered to help the two girls, but they were both terrified, contemplating whether or not they could trust this old man. They were escorted inside and his wife realised that Sarah and Rachel were Jews who had escaped, so she promised them that they would take good care of them. They were given healthy portions of food and large glasses of water and a warm bath. The old couple introduced themselves as Jules and Genevieve. They took superb care for Sarah and Rachel, as if they were their own children. Sarah began to grow more trust towards the couple and soon enough become attached to them like magnets.
