Banning Fictional Books for Good
I wrote a note to Mrs. Bradley that read: "Suicide. It's something I've been thinking about. Not too seriously, but I have been thinking about it." Fiction has a huge impact on the subject matter of everyday lives. It provokes our subconscious mind to realize that fiction is reality. Reading the fictitious content can promote healthy discussion about societal issues such as drug abuse, depression, and suicide. After being the new girl stuck in a reputation no one wants to uphold, she lets depression get the best of her. Hannah records thirteen cassette tapes and sends them out to thirteen people who were the leading causes of her death. One of the characters apart of the cassette tape was Clay Jensen who had a dramatic change after listening to her voice one last time. Romance sparks a lot in this story but leaves you wondering if Clay could have done something to keep her alive. If all the characters realized Hannah Baker wanted to give her life; the commodity could have changed. As the story comes close to the end, the relationships strengthen and become deeper. Jay Asher did not just write this emotional anecdote out of the blue, he got several of the information from his niece that had attempted the same scenario as Hannah had. An article entitled “Suicide Facts” informs us that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. All ages have been giving their lives while we only hear about these stories twice a week. The article states that, “Every Day, approximately 105 Americans die by suicide.” 79% of males commit suicide which leaves 21% of women. We have become a society of broken dreams where day-to-day objects are used to perpetrate suicide. Scarfs from christmas, Firearms for hunting, and nonetheless an overdose of pills or poison. The article reveals that, “ Over 800,000 people die by suicide every year WORLDWIDE. Although this article has strong information, will children and teenagers ever be eagered to read non-fiction where as a fictional story connects more to the reader's eye? Don't misread this though; non-fiction has value but keeping fictive books would be a great conversation to the similarity between it and reality. For example, collating this article and Thirteen Reasons Why leads to the article's topic of drug abuse and depression in the United States and stop it from occurring on a daily basis.
