The behavior of people in a crowd can change so drastically from how each individual usually acts, that this phenomenon, mob mentality, has a negative effect on society. Mob mentality is when people are influenced by others to adopt behaviors unusual to them, which very often leads to conflict. An instance where this is exhibited in media is in Lord of the Flies by William Golding, when one of the littluns proposes the idea that there may be a beast on the island. This paranoia spreads throughout most of the other boys and results in the death of two of them.
