The Shelton gang terrorized the area of Fairfield Il., in Wayne County, during the prohibition era. During the prohibition the Shelton’s got into bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, facts about the organization, and how it all ended in 1945. During the prohibition, they bootlegged their own moonshine and others all over Wayne County. While they were bootlegging and making alcohol, they made a lot of rivals with other bootleggers in the area. Beside just bootlegging they also had casinos for people to gamble at all over southern IL.
Antebellum South Carolina was a time in United States history that is known for its major economic booms by the use of slave labor for harvesting cotton and other cash crops. The 50 years after the revolution was called the Antebellum Era and this was the time prior to the civil war. Whitney’s invention of the Cotton Gin allowed for faster processing of cotton, and was a major cause for the economic booms that emerged from South Carolina in the early 1800’s. This time period in United States history is and will always be a pivotal cause for why America is what it is today, in modern times.
The caste and class concept brought attention to how bad the African-American poverty was then and it also got attention of the racism divide that’s happening in the South compared to the North. The case of Tom Robinson in “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee was based on race and nothing else and the Scottsboro boys case mainly lead to a change in the judicial system. The Tom Robinson case was a really horrific and biased case, then came the Scottsboro case which was twenty years long and changed the course of the judicial system. The caste and class concept was still living on for a while until small stuff got changed like having more rights for blacks and many more stuff. All these cases sparked a Civil Rights movement that got the government's attention of how bad the racism was in the
MLK was a legendary man, who did bold things in the name of justice, freedom and equality. Kind of like Americans, except MLK means the equality part. He has done many works, and his most famous is the “I Have a Dream” speech. Another famous document he wrote is his “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, which he wrote while jailed for nonviolent protesting of racial segregation. To argue his point, MLK uses logos, or clear reasoning with facts, and pathos, or charged language used to stir up emotion.
Often times it is equality and fairness these groups are seeking. Mob mentality type behaviors often include violence because the word mob conjures an image of a chaotic and violent crowd. Mob mentality is shown in To Kill a Mockingbird in multiple instances. This occurs when Mr. Cunningham and others are in a group outside the jail attempting to hurt Tom. Scout then jumps out of the shadows to meet Atticus, but finds herself bringing the mob to their senses.
During the mid nineteen thirties there was ample prejudice from whites towards African Americans. This prejudice was greatly depicted in one particular case of nine young black men. The Scottsboro Boys were labeled as outcasts and faced a considerable amount of prejudice during their trials for a crime they had not committed; although some of the nine Boys were exonerated during the trials, the last of the Scottsboro Boys were not redeemed until decades later. On March 25, 1931, during the height of the Great Depression, a group of nine black boys, later known as the Scottsboro Boys, was traveling on a train towards Memphis, Tennessee, in search of work.
Lawlessness was what ruled the lands until order was settled in, through the system. As a way to control, officials began utilizing criminal law to their advantage, by forcing freed slaves back to captivity, under the state’s control. With no actual prison, politicians, businessmen, and sheriffs took it upon themselves to use the prisoners for what they thought better. Injustice and violence against the African American population was popular in many states, especially in the South, where groups not only used political influence to downgrade the rights of African Americans but also, arson, intimidation and lynching. This might have been one of the “better” moments that characterized Mississippi’s racial injustice.
This continued through 1865, after the Civil War, where slavery was finally made illegal. People now had to pay their maids and workers. Even though slavery was now illegal that didn’t stop people from treated blacks like trash. The Outsiders make the readers think about if it is right to judge people because of social class, their family and how they look. The further you get into the book the more you think of the hardships of people judging you. There are multiple ways people judge you that are shown in the book such as family/friends and social class/ income. This reminds the reader about the civil rights movement, which is around the same time as when the book takes place. At the end of the book you get the message that being prejudiced is not the right thing.
Mob mentality can be seen in To Kill a Mockingbird in many ways. An example of mob mentality in the article, What is Mob Mentality, is when there is a department store sale and loads of shoppers are rushing to the racks, pushing each other out of their way (Smith). This situation could cause snowballing violence and could cause people to get trampled (Smith). In To Kill a Mockingbird, there are a few examples of mob mentality. One of those examples is when the mob of men showed up at the jail to kill Tom (Lee 241).
These three points are all related to the racism. Barack Obama once said, “She sowed us the beautiful complexity of our common humanity, and the importance of striving for justice in our own lives, our communities, and our country.” To Kill a Mockingbird taught the readers the play racism had on people’s emotions and actions. How is the racial problem of the southern states of USA in the 1930s portrayed in To Kill a Mockingbird? INTRO In the 1930s the Southern states of America suffered from a strong discrimination and racial hatred towards colored people. They had no rights, no respect and were not allowed to go places white people went. In other words they were segregated from the rest of the society.
The popular home team broke out from their tight huddle and separated throughout the field. Their anguished faces concentrated on the last quarter; they are only 5 points up. The earnest and intoxicating energy transfers into the equally tense crowd. The fierce competition begins to boil up into the fans. Someone yells a blind comment within the rage and before anyone knows it, fights break out throughout the crowd.
The authors use of words such as “dark clouds of racial prejudice” and “I cannot sit idly by” shows the injustice that was occurring in Birmingham. The “dark clouds” represent the social climate of Birmingham, allowing readers to see the negative effect it his having on the black citizens. He believed the injustice needed to be addressed and action needed to be taken against it, therefore what he did was justified. Additionally when Martin Luther King writes, “nagging signs reading ‘white’ men and colored when your first name becomes ‘nigger’ and your wife and mother are never given the respected title of Mrs…” This further demonstrates the unjust treatment of African Americans which is why someone needed to take action and not idly sit by as these things occcurred.
Marxist Within the Mockingbird Today the world is open to people of all races, economic classes and much more, but in the 1930’s the world was not as accepting. To Kill A Mockingbird, is a book by Harper Lee which takes place in the 1930’s. Throughout the story there are issues with feminism, racism, and injustice. It starts with a young girl and her family, and as the book progresses the reader gets to find out some of the things that go on in their life and around them. Such as a stressful case which includes, a black innocent man who is accused for something he did not do.
