Mobilization: Developing Strategies To Empower People In My Community

My overall goal as an organizer is to empower people in my community and help people prepare, obtain resources, and develop strategies that promote the cause of ending homelessness. I would like to work with an established community institution so that I can build relationships with people. I can start this process out by using mobilization tactics. Mobilization occurs when people who face problems that are the same come together to fight back in a way that is organized (Rubin & Rubin, 2008). There are several ways that I could mobilize people to help. My first approach would be a technique called canvassing. Canvassing occurs when professional organizers or volunteers go door-to-door to meet people so that I can give them the opportunity to voice what they have to say. As an organizer I would take the time out to introduce myself and my social organization (Rubin & Rubin, 2008). Door-to-door contact helps to build an organization with people who feel like those are valued equally (Rubin & Rubin, 2008). Canvassing is a very important technique because it deals with person to person contract. This builds organizations where people feel equally valued and it is also a way to build the strength of such a progressive movement with powerful people in the community (Rubin & Rubin, 2008). I know for sure that need to develop some public speaking skills. This type of skill is very important to have so that you can influence people through communicating and this is also a way to get the message clear. Administrative and managerial skills are also important for me to have because it involves financing and planning which can ultimately lead to empowerment (Rubin & Rubin, 2008).
