Moby Dick Brildad's Portrayal Of Women

Throughout Moby Dick, we only see tiny glimpses of women who exist in the background or in various stories from the men aboard the Pequod. These women tend to not have any personality or sexuality. An example of this is Bildad's sister whose name is Charity. Her name speaks for itself and shows just how the men really view and think about her. She decorates the boat so that "nothing could be found wanting." (pg 81). The crew even call her Aunt Charity because she was “ready to turn her hand and heart to anything that promised to yield safety, comfort, and consolation to all on board a ship in which her beloved brother Bildad (81)”.
