In the world that we live in today, there are so many people dying each day due racially or culturally related hate crimes. The importance of teaching cultural diversity in our schools should be in the forefront of our curriculum. As a child growing up in New York, I remember acts of terrorism, discrimination and segregation, but never by a child, or teenager. Today we are continuously enduring the same acts, but not by adults, but by our youth. A developmental model of intercultural maturity gives us the foundation for forming an integrated model, which is needed in the development of intercultural maturity. Keagans model is considered holistic because it incorporates and integrates the three dimensions of development (King & Baxter, 2005, p574). The author claims that one needs to encompass and understand all three dimensions of development in order to effectively deal with life’s tasks (King & Baxter, 2005, p574). Kegan claims that people that have accomplish intercultural maturity of better able to handle life issues because they are able to exemplify “self authorship” (King & Baxter, 2005, p574). Self authorship is the ability to look at your own life and make any changes to yourself or your surroundings to accomplish your goals (King & Baxter, 2005, p574). The author also claims that before trying to accomplish “self authorship”, a person must understand cognitive, intrapersonal, and interpersonal development (King & Baxter, 2005, p574). I find this model to be quite multidimensional as it encourages sensitivity to others, a sense of oneself that enables one to listen to and learn from others to exhibit empathy, and other key skills. Many people have died to protect those ideas. By not educating our youth, about cultural diversity, our country will crumble from within. A developmental model of intercultural maturity is a great foundation for forming an integrated model of the development of intercultural maturity. Used correctly, this model will provide us with the tool for understanding and promoting development of intercultural maturity.
