WW1 was the first industrial war, as it was marked by the new weapons and military technology introduced to aid in fighting. As the level of fighting increased, military technology advanced throughout the war. Machine guns, planes, tanks, and artillery were some of the most used and advanced weapons. Most of the machine guns at the start of the war were heavy and needed a team of soldiers to operate it. This shows how when they were first used, they weren’t very well developed as it was new, primitive technology, and were mostly used as defensive weapons due to their immobility.
In order to analyze and answer the question, we must first understand the context of trench warfare. World War 1 was a time when advanced weapons and technology were invented. Weapons such as machine guns, artillery, tanks, and other long range military weapons were used at the opposing side. To defend against a wide use of artillery and other long range weapons, trench warfare was used by both the allied and central powers. Trench warfare was a very important factor in World War 1, not only because it would defend one’s own trench, but also attempt to attack the enemies at the same time.
World War one was a military conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918. The war involved two sides which were entitled the “Central Power” and “Allies”. The Western Front was quickly filled with trenches, with the introduction of the trenches it then bought many new then to war such as poison gas, hand grenades, tanks, and heavy mortar attacks. Trench warfare was not the nicest way to be living life, there were many diseases during World War One and what the trenches were when they first started to when they finished.

WW1 was the first war to truly tear away from the fantasy of battle, and replaced it with the brutal reality of widespread death. It is true that war in the trenches were extremely uncomfortable and difficult, but there is debate on whether the trenches was a smart strategy to succeed. Trench warfare emerged because of the state of technology in the second decade of the 20th century. At this time there were rapid advances in military technology. Weapons and artilleries had become more advanced immeasurably more advanced that it was just a few decades before. In 1914, weaponry was made with hydraulic mechanisms for absorbing recoil, as a result the weapons did not have to be repositioned after every shot.
Hardships faced in World War 1 War can be compared to an everlasting fever with tremendous side effects, no one, in particular, wants it, but, all at once there it is. Combat before World War 1 had the usage of inefficient had to hand weapons like knives and regular bayonets. Killing mass numbers of people was not as effective as during World War 1 as technology developed to kill more efficiently. Knives and bayonets turned into machine guns, slow marching troops were transported by tanks and submarines, poison gas and barbed wires replaced shields. When woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany, many American men were eager and willing to go to war “Through American muscle, American practices, American ideas.” World war 1 changed the landscape of America by incorporating new technology such as the use of advanced weapons, motorized vehicles, and deadly chemical warfare.

The war was between the Allies, which included Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States, and the Central Powers, w that included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. Trenches were necessary when two armies face stalemate and neither side is able to advance to the other side. Trench warfare was very important during the war because it helped soldiers to cover up from the attack as well as a shelter although it has consequences. You may think trenches are a great way of staying safe of the war while you’re a soldier but you will never know the conditions that soldiers needed to be through.
Many men died in this “no-man’s land.” Trench warfare was deadly, horribly inefficient, and brutal for the soldiers living there. Trench warfare was deadly because of all the new technologies being utilized during World War I. One of the new and improved technologies was the machine gun. The machine gun was responsible for killing many soldiers when they crossed into “no-man’s land.” The machine gun would fire hundreds of bullets with the pull of the trigger.
During the time period of World War 1 there were many advancements in weaponry that was used during this time period. World War 1 took place from 1914-1918. The way weapons were used in the war was drastically changed and many weapons were new and were being used for the first time, The style of fighting was very different and the new weapons that were introduced were able to take over the way wars were fought. The new weapon of gas was introduced during this was and was a major weapon during the war. Other new advancements like airplanes were used to drop bombs on enemy lines.
On the Western Front in 1914–18, both sides constructed trench and dugout systems opposing each other along a front, protected from assault by barbed wire, mines, and other obstacles that you couldn’t get thru. By “1914 [the United States had] produced over one-third of the world’s manufactured goods,” (Foner, 680) making the U.S. “the leading industrial power” (Foner, 680). Europeans had already “complained of an “American invasion” of steel, oil, agricultural equipment, and consumer goods” (Foner, 680). At this time, America had both the economy and population to produce enough soldiers, supplies, and money to win any war.
WW1 is known as the first modern war because it saw the incorporation of mechanical weapons. The Central Powers and Allies both used a variety of weapons such as machine guns, chemical weapons , clothing, biplanes, artillery, tanks, grenades, and rifles. These weapons were state of the art for the early 20th century. These weapons caused casualties to skyrocket as the Allies and the Central Powers were in a stalemate.
During World War I, the majority of the fighting on the western front was done from trenches. These trenches were built differently by each country, but they all served the same goal, to provide soldiers cover and concealment, as any movement outside of trenches could be extremely costly. The life of a typical soldier fighting in World War I trenches is characterized by zero sleep, rat infestations, amputations, and a constant fear of death. The fighting in these trenches was violent and often seemed futile, with the small land gains being paid for with huge losses of life. Trenches in World War I were built with only protection in mind.
