1. If given the power, I would support and convert the US system into a direct democracy which means the winner of the presidential popular vote would win the presidency. On page 182 in the book, it states that a direct democracy enables all actors with a voice (the ability to vote) to make decisions on the matter at hand. Furthermore, a direct democracy provides voice to those affected by the issue. So basically, a direct democracy gives the power to the people. A representative would not be needed, and the people would feel as though they matter! A direct presidential election would also prevent the idea of the government ignoring the people’s wishes as in the recent 2016 presidential election.

The winner of the presidential election should be required to achieve majority of the votes. On page 187 and 188, the book highlights the story of how Governor Davis was recalled from office. Governor Davis recalled led to an election that included 135 candidates. This election was not a majority vote but a plurality vote. This meant that the candidate with the most votes wins the election. Governor Arnold won the election, although majority of the people voted for another candidate. This is not fair. If this was the United States presidential elections, a few million people could decide who sits in the highest office in the land for 323 million people. On page 183, the book tells us that the Senate gives smaller states a disproportionately large voice because they have the same voice as the large states. This composition of the Senate gives smaller states the same power as the large states. It also gives smaller states the voice the change policies just as the larger states. In addition to that, this gives smaller states more power during presidential elections. Ultimately, it is the swing states who decide whom the president is.
