In addition to a previous secondary teaching certification from the State of Florida and a Master of Science degree in Strategic Studies in the United States, I am nearing completion of a PhD in International Relations from the Australian National University. I also have an equivalent combination of relevant knowledge, training and experience acquired over the course of twenty years of employment in academia and public service. In 2005, I discovered my passion for advancing student learning when I began teaching science in a high-need urban high school in Florida suffering from a temporary teacher shortage. Since then, I have worked extensively with academic staff and students in the U.S., New Zealand and Australia in various tertiary roles that allowed me to cultivated an expertise in university teaching, research, and enhancing curriculum, with a special emphasis on foundation studies, information research, and learning skills; particularly for students from international and non-English speaking backgrounds. I have not yet worked within a library, but I have a solid understanding of the changing role and evolving capabilities of university libraries in general, and the landscape of library services at Monash University. Learning skills, mass communication, data management, alternative metrics for research impact, and digital preservation initiatives all demand staff who offer more than traditional information literacy skills, and I am eager to use my diverse knowledge and skills to promote and help deliver these library services to both students and staff.
