In the documentary, Monica and David directed by Alexandra Codina, Monica’s cousin, shows a couple Monica and David who both have Down syndrome getting married and trying to be independent. Director Codina shows us although Monica and David face many challenges, the couple still can live happily, even with Down syndrome which is considered a “handicap.” Monica and David are a special needs couple that show us the many tasks they are capable of. Even though Monica and David suffer from Down syndrome they are able to fold clothes, make the bed every morning, and even apply for jobs. Despite the many challenges, Monica and David face, they show us Down syndrome isn’t a handicap society makes it out to be. Furthermore, in the documentary we see Monica and David as a capable couple who aren’t handicap. Instead, Monica and David progress as a couple and state handicap is someone who can’t hear or talk. In an interview with Monica and David, they describe what a handicap person is to them. Although Codina’s documentary talks about the many incapability Monica and David face, Monica and David are shockingly able as well. In the following scene where Monica and David are seen making the bed every morning and David is learning to take insulin shots on his own, describes that Monica and David are able and as Monica states “handicap is someone who can’t work and is in a wheelchair.” Here Codina is suggesting that Monica and David don’t believe they are handicap and instead believe they are able bodies. The documentary Monica and David discusses about how a handicap is not as defined as someone who thinks but instead it something we consider evolving and
