In W.W Jacob’s short story “The Monkey’s Paw,” there are many instances of foreshadowing in order to keep readers engaged and on the edge of their seats. In part one of “The Monkey’ Paw’” the White family is introduced to the monkey’s paw by, family, friend Sergeant Major Morris. Major Morris explains the dire outcome of using the paw. Mrs. White asks if anyone has used the paw before and Major Morris responds with “The first man used his wishes, yes,”...”I don 't know what his first two wishes were, but the third was for death.
If you must wish, ‘’ he said gruffly’’ wish for something sensible (page 35, paragraph 9). Why would the Sgt say wish for something sensible. Normally
Authors commonly like to contribute clues and hints throughout their stories to give the reader an indication of a future event. This is called foreshadowing. Foreshadowing can incorporate meaning, suspense, and tension throughout a novel, making the reader more intrigued and eager to know what will happen later on in the story. W.W. Jacobs creates suspense and tension throughout “The Monkey’s Paw” through the use of this writing technique to add to the reading experience. For instance, in paragraphs 18 and 19 from “The Monkey’s Paw” when the Sergeant-Major Morris is asked the question “What was that you started telling me the other day about a monkey’s paw or something, Morris?” by Mr. White, Morris hurriedly replied saying “Nothing’’.
In the story, “The Monkey’s Paw”, the White’s acquire a monkey’s paw from an old friend. The friend reveals that the paw is considered magic and then gives it to the Whites, starting a chain of events that brings sorrow to the family. However, just who is responsible for the misfortune that came to the Whites? Sergeant-
Creepy and foreboding are two moods that prevails in the short story "The Monkey's Paw. " The story begins with cold evening, most of the story takes place in night. The house is an out-of-the-way place. The exposition of the monkey's paw adds the touch of horror to the story, but it is the paw's magical powers that draws the reader's attention into the tale.
Thesis: In The Monkey's Paw by W.W Jacobs, the realistic essence of the monkey's paw made it fundamentally creepy. Point 1: The monkey's paw is a symbol for inclination for greed, exposing our superior wants as people, even the most humble. Point 2: Consequences for the actions of those using the paw develops the image of regret and fear. Point 3:
#1 about “The Monkey's Paw” The cause is that Morris said If you keep it, don't blame me for what happens. Sargent-Major Morris was the when Mr. White the paw, that night he gave it to him because he wanted it for it's power, Morris told Mr. White that the last wish will be evil. The fear in the charters words what they say it is like they
Arthur St. John Adcock is an English novelist and poet as well as a journalist. He mentions that “the uncanny grimness of ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ by a pathos that is wrought to a pitch of almost painful intensity when the knock comes on the door at night and the heart-broken mother, after struggling desperately with the bolts, flings the door open and there is nothing there” (Adcock 3). The family makes an avoidable mistake by wishing with the monkey’s paw, but when they finally realize that, it is already too late. Their first innocent wish flips their lives upside down and they bring themselves irreversible pain and sorrow through a few words. Carl Mowery, a professor at several universities with a doctorate in rhetoric and composition, gives a great statement about the story as a whole.
In The Monkeys Paw, Mrs. White used the magical object (monkey’s paw). One out of the three wishes granted using the monkeys paw was to have her son back. The outcome of this was pounding at the door, not knowing exactly who was behind the door. The Monkeys Paw is all about granting wishes and not expecting its outcome. This is comparable to The Story of an Hour because Mrs. Mallard wished to have her husband back in her life, but she didn’t expect the outcome of actually seeing her husband alive.
Unfortunately, in the story, “Monkey Paw,” the son Herbert dies, I believe Herbert is the blame. Herbert was the blame of death because he stated in the story “If the tale about the monkeys paw is not more truthful than those he has been telling us; we shan’t make much us of it”. He didn’t really think about what the paw was capable of. Also he said “we’ll just wish for 200lbs, then; that’ll just do it.”
[To the boys]: You see what I been talking about? The greatest things can happen! (Act 1) Willy clings to Ben's material success as tangible evidence of his family's worth. He longs to measure up to the financial success of his brother. In many ways, Ben's success fuels Willy's misguided notion that riches are just around the corner” (Miller, 48).
That creates suspense because the reader wants to know why he wished for death. It foreshadows that the paw brings bad luck. Sergeant Major Morris also tells the Whites “…don’t blame me for what happens” (Jacobs 91). It foreshadows that something very bad is going to happen. Herbert foreshadows his death by saying the quote “Well I don’t see the money…and I bet I never shall”(134-135 Jacobs).
The conflict in the story is not only the monkey’s paw but was somewhat Mr. White’s attitude. If he never was that greedy the story would have changed he would have agreed with Morris and burned the monkey’s paw but he didn’t want to do that creating the plot. Any change in the plot could have/ would have altered the course of the story but also altering the theme. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” the downfall of the White family is when they receive the two hundred pounds as a compensation for the son’s death which was actually caused by messing with fate.
AIDS CONSPIRACY Most people today believe that HIV and AIDS originated in Africa ("Acquired immune deficiency syndrome: biological, medical, social, and legal issues”). However, no one really knows where the virus originated from. Thousands of conspiracy theories are mixed everyday making shocking claims about anything. Examining the first cases, the first outbreak, and many other important factors in the history of AIDS, many different possibilities have been proposed regarding the origin of the disease (“The Politics of Conspiracy Theories”). Some people believe that it was the U.S. Government who created aids.
In all conclusion, the Monkey 's Paw shows the theme that you should never mess with fate. Even if you need more because you never know what you
