Anastasia Walker Professor Ifedi Introduction to Political Science October 29, 2014 Book Report: Gideon’s Trumpet by Anthony Lewis The book Gideon’s Trumpet was written by Anthony Lewis, who was for many years a prominent reporter and columnist for the New York Times. Lewis tells the story of Clarence Earl Gideon, the plaintiff in the landmark Gideon v. Wainwright decision by the United States Supreme Court. The case was decided in 1963 and established that criminal defendants in the United States have the constitutional right to be represented in court by counsel even if they are unable to personally afford to pay an attorney.
Mrs. Dubose lived alone. Jem and Scout were scared of her and hated her. Atticus would get furious about what Mrs. Dubose said to him. Jem turned twelve during this chapter. Jem bought a steam engine and Scout got a baton.
Atticus is strongly affected by racism and due to the impacts of racism his reputation went down the drain and he also lost his case due to racist judgements but yet Atticus fought for Toms freedom and did not give up and ignored the names he was called. Atticus is affected by racism because he is fighting for a black man, therefore it is hard for him to win the case due to racist judgements such as, “To begin with this case should never have come to trial. This case is simple as black and white.” (Lee271) This quote is said by the jury and is a racial judgment since they are saying that the whites are always above the blacks and blacks will always commit the crimes which puts Atticus in a rough situation because the jury will believe Tom Robinson
Atticus is Scout and Jem’s father in the book, they both admire him very much, with that many town folks do too. The book has Atticus as a dad and a lawyer, in the book the difficulty challenge is defending a colored man. Many of the town people frown upon this. Atticus is based upon Harper Lee’s Dad, Amasa Coleman Lee. He too was a lawyer, and a great father Lee loved.
In Harper Lee's classic “To Kill A MockingBird” A great scene is when Scout and Jem were in court when Atticus was defending Tom Robinson. Atticus demonstrates the use of setting diction (words) and pathos I think they learned that no matter how right you are, other people that don't like you well say that you're wrong. No matter how much evidence Atticus showed they weren't going to change the outcome of the trail.
TKAMB chapters 15-17 S.I.R by Tri Nguyen 1. In chapter 15, Heck Tate’s mob wanted to talk to Atticus that Tom Robinson have been moved to Maycomb Jail, and that there might be trouble concerning Atticus and Tom Robinson. It stated on page 165, “Mr. Tate was saying, “I don’t look for any trouble, but I can’t guarantee there won’t be any . . .” This show that as the trial are coming nearer, the people are getting more impatient, and this would cause them to act violence not only to the Negroes, but also to their fellow kind. This also show that prejudice can change a person point of view, and make them think only about their superiority over Negroes even though some of them are no better than the Negroes themselves, like the Ewell and the Cunningham.
Evil: I think that Bob Ewell's should be in this column. On pages 227-234 is where Atticus is asking Bob questions about what happened the night of Mayella’s “rape”. During this whole court case Bob was joking in the beginning about Mayella and it was clear that he doesn’t care much for Mayella. He also uses very inappropriate language in the courtroom. On page 230 Bob says “I got to the fence I heard Mayella screaming like a stuck hog inside the house.”
Throughout the book many events and characteristic changes occur to support both statements. A person is born with a certain personality trait and it can’t be changed, they might seem like another person, or they might actually be another person, however, the same personality trait/s still exists. This personality trait will emerge, as the for second statement this person might not know they have this trait, if there was a secret trait, it would be how that person wants to react to certain situations. My example: imagine a racist person.
The bloody scene unfolded before my eyes. I didn’t notice that my face was stiffened with fear. The flames were flickering like dancing devils, seemingly pleased about this situation. I firmly closed my eyes, squeezing both of them tightly shut. This must be the curse from the blimmin’ devil.
No one in this town would ever believe a black man's word over a white one. People here are so racist and judgemental, i can’t take it. No one believes me even when they know i’m telling the truth. Atticus is the only one in here that believes in me, the only one that has a good heart. Atticus tells me that we have a good case, that we could win, but why do i have this feeling that we won’t.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee’s use of dialogue is effective because the dialogue shows the reader characters’ traits and their feelings as well as developing a distinct setting for the novel. Within dialogue throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, especially through discussion in chapter 26, traits of both Scout and Miss Gates are revealed and the setting and social norms are demonstrated. The dialogue demonstrates the hypocritical nature of the discrimination in their hometown. Lee identifies this through Scout’s thoughts on social integrity as discussed with Jem in chapter 26, “Jem, how can you hate Hitler so bad an’ then turn around and be ugly about about folks right at home.”
I believe people should always follow their dreams. After all, you just might come up with something new, like falling in love and such. See I found this dream to be with Scout and I intend to follow is one through ‘til the day I die. Heck, I would run away for her, and I did.

Atticus felt like choking when he got his first kiss. The boy tried to contain this embarrassing truth of his first kiss, but he remembered it vividly. “My first kiss...made me feel gay for a few seconds of my life. Thanks to Joey, I know that I am a straight man. Without him, I still might be curious.”
“Your aunt has asked me to try and impress upon you and Jean Louise that you are not from run of the mill people, that you are the product of several generations’ gentle breeding’ …….. And that you should try to live up to your name” (pg147) But I don’t want them to be something they 're not. It’s unreasonable for society and in particular my sister to predetermine what they should and shouldn’t wear, how they should act and how they look. I know Alexandra is only trying to help, but it’s not the right thing to do.
