Did you ever manage to notice that a lot of the movies, and books follow the same plot? Joseph Campbell a famous scholar who studied mythology across the world, coined the term monomyth meaning one myth. The monomyth consists of three main stages the hero goes through. The departure stage, initiation and the hero's return. Ray Bradbury is one of the many authors that emulated, and recycled the hero's journey in his own creative work.
The first right of passage the hero undergoes along the monomyth is classified as the departure or separation phase. The stage of departure is known as the hero’s doubts in taking his or her first steps into the adventure. During this stage the hero meets his mentor. The mentor looks out for the hero and gives him advice and guidance. Faber is a retired english professor, who thinks that the cowardness of their society is what brought down book burning. He is very shy so that is why he minimally helps Montag to save their dystopian society. “And something more! It listens! If you put it in your ear, Montag, I can sit comfortably home, warming my frightened bones, and hear and analyse the firemen's world ,find it’s weakness without danger” (Bradbury 21). Faber is the mentor he gives Montag the boon. The Green Bullet allows faber to talk to montag through something similar to a ear piece. The hero has comfort knowing he isn't alone and is determined to do anything to save is society. The monomyth also states the hero goes through trial and error. For example Montag tries to talk to Mildred's friends Mrs.Phelps and Mrs.Bowls. They disappear into the parlor walls. Montag turns off the walls and tries to engage the women in a friendly conversation. “ It shocked me to see Mrs.Phelps cry maybe they're right maybe its best to not face things, to run have fun I don't know, I feel guilty ” (Bradbury 103-104) This scene reveals Montag feels guilty for testing the women. The departure stage Montag realized he had to go pursue in that he believed in and fight against the dystopian society. Initiation phase Montag met his mentor Faber and together worked out a plan to conquer the firemen and run away from the “monster” mechanical hound. The most important stage the transformation stage where Montag is revived and polished from the old him he is rejuvenated and meets Granger and the other professors and all of them go to the ruins of the old society to guide and teach the people that survived to lead them in the right way.
