Monsanto Deal Creates Farm Giant I choose this article because I do not believe genetically modified crops should be as accepted and used as much as they are. Monsanto is a pharmaceutical giant that invests in biotech farming. This means that they inject genes into seeds to make them repel insects, pesticides, and require less water. Bayer also develops genetically modified crops and pesticides. If Bayer AG and Monsanto merge it will create one of the world’s largest agrichemical conglomerates. If this merger takes place it will be one of three agricultural mergers that have happened over the past year and these three companies will control more than three quarters of United States corn seed sales and 70% of the world’s pesticides. Monsanto purposely puts small farmers out of business. In the past year 94% of soybean acres and 92% of corn acres were planted using biotech varieties. Monsanto promised these seeds would cut the costs of labor and pesticides. The truth is that farmers are not seeing these savings and the seeds are evolving to resist weeds and the pesticides. These seeds are costing nearly five times the amount paid two decades ago. Since 2013 millions of tons of corn, soybean, and wheat has been produced that has not been consumed. Farmers are earning less now that these seeds have produced so many crops. Farmers are now …show more content…
Monsanto is the leading producer and manufacturer of the herbicide glyphosate and Round-Up a glyphosate-based herbicide that kills everything that it touches. These seeds are engineered to resist these very pesticides that Monsanto makes. These seeds are also made to repel certain diseases, but some of these diseases aren’t even an issue for the farmers. The company once manufactured controversial products such as the insecticide DDT, PCBs, and Monsanto was a major producer of Agent Orange for United States Armed Forces operations in
