Throughout the book and the movie it is shown that both of the families follow the same Punjabi culture, however they both have different ideas on what that is. The role of both the fathers is different, in the book he is very abusive and rude, in the movie the father is a very caring man who wants the best for his family no matter what. Both of the families want their children to have an arranged marriage, however in the book the marriages are forced, and in the movie it is up to the children whether they want to have an arranged marriage or not, which is why they enjoy the weddings more. At the beginning of the book Manny is happier, he has a girlfriend, friends and doesn't have to worry about anything. Towards the end when he gets older the family start to talk to him about having an arranged marriage and how he doesn't have any choice in it. The family doesn't care much about what he wants to do with his life or how he feels about anything. The monsoon family is quite a wealthy one that will support what their family wants.
